At post office , small Arkansas town 360 population, today there was a very attractive lady who drove up in a mid size imported car. I do not know the make. The lady was really nice looking and was wearing denim jeans and high heels. she never even looked at me. When she tried to start her car the starter just clicked . I was sure it was dirty battery cables. I asked her to pop the hood and I would help her.she just turned her head and kept ignoring me. I asked her a couple more times to let me help her but I guess she did not know that i was a southern gentleman was wanting to help her. After a couple dozen clicks on the starter switch she rolled down the window just a bit and said, "Call me a tow truck." I answered, "you are a tow truck!" and walked away.

poogie,

If I'm not flying by at 70mph, I usually try and OFFER help. Many times people don't want it, sometimes they look nervous. Doesn't matter, at least I offered and I don't feel offended if they refuse.

Last year, funny thing happened. Noticed a minivan in the ditch of the cloverleaf entrance ramp of the freeway. A young man was trying to jack it up. Pulled over on the shoulder, offered help. He was polite and grateful. He had broken the bead when he slid off the curved ramp (probably going too fast). I said let's get it out of the ditch back onto the shoulder to change the tire. While I was on my back hooking up my chains to his underbody, I heard a "What's going on?". Looked up to see a State Policeman. Kept working and said "just pulling him out of the ditch". Officer said "Stop and get up". I got up. He walked over to the kid, asked if he was armed (he said no) and started to frisk him. Now, the kid was as nice and polite as I was, but the officer must have sensed something. Asked him if he had a record (yes, he was on parole for b/e). WOW, I thought. Officer asked if he could look in the van. Kid said "sure". Cop stuck his head in the van and came back out with a joint and a baggie. Told the kid to turn around and kneel down and slapped the cuffs on. Told me to leave as "this was his van now". Don't know why the cop zeroed in on that kid. Heck, I think I looked more nervous than the kid. Kinda felt bad for the kid as he was as polite and friendly as could be.

Anyway, I still stop and offer help if I can, especially if I'm in jeans and in my truck with tools. I'd like to think someone would do the same for my wife and/or daughters.

We have that all over St Cloud. The income/lifestyle division. The people in the million dollar homes and desigener clothes people just plain think they are better than most, granted some have worked hard to get what they have, but the poorer folks arent peasants, yet.

Well maybe she'll learn you can be cautious and still be courteous, but I doubt she'll learn.

You've heard the saying "beware the ides of March". This gal was probably thinking "beware the ideas of a redneck". So...if you're in a small town where everybody knows everybody and you didn't know her, she was probably just visiting. Maybe from a big city. My sister moved to Chicago while she was still young and said one of the cardinal rules is never make eye contact with a strange guy. It's gotta be a burden to bear, always having to be on guard. And when you did what you did, she probably thought she was right being cautious.

Gotta tell you one that happened to me. Back in the days before cellphones when cb radios were more common, I did a lot of interstate traveling. On the cb was a gal's voice saying her car was conking out. Up ahead a short way I saw a car going off on the berm. I called back describing the car and asked if it was her. She said yes. I pulled up behind to see what I could do to help. Pretty soon she got out for me to try restarting it. First I put the gas pedal to the floor, and it started. THE ISSUE WAS, WHEN I GOT IN HER CAR THERE ON THE PASSENGER SEAT WAS A STACK OF MONEY! I think she realized it the same instant I did. I got back out as quick as possible. The car continued to run, I told her I'd stay behind til the next exit, it wasn't running right but it made it.

I guess she was not like that lady in "Tight- Fitting Jeans" that Conway sang about..

I guess a lot of folks are just scared of everybody & everything ,these days.. The best thing to do, was just let her be.. Surely she had a cell phone to call someone..

Consider yourself lucky that you live where you do. Here in the Fox Valley area of Wi. I'd say that at least 85% of the people are pure jerks. Won't do anything for you but expect you to kiss their butt and do whatever they want without so much as a thank you.

Very small town here . Neighbor walked out of the hardware store , colored lady had a car that wouldn't start . ( little Dodge ) He had owned several of them . He looked it over and knew what it took to fix it . When he told her she said I don't have any money to pay for it . She told him she was from the city and just started working for the state . Neighbor called the Dodge dealer& told them to fix it .. She ask how he could be so kind to her , he told her " I couldn't leave a pregnant woman out here like this . She said I'm NOT pregnant ! He said your car isn't fixed yet either ."Told her to send him the money when she could . She did

We have them in the small Texas towns too. People these days do not appreciate someone being nice to them.
