I wasn't too happy to see today that the water pump on my 1996 Ford F350 with a Powerstroke Diesel (23,000 miles) is starting to leak. I was wondering if anyone can give me some advise on the job. Do I need special tools ( fan nut wrench etc.) Are there any tricks ? Do I use a special sealer on anything? How long does the job take by someone who knows what they are doing ( not me!)? Thanks!!

you can rent fan removal tool @ parts store. look carefully @ sticker on top of fan shroud; i have 6/95 model in shop that is marked RH thread. take your time removing bolts as they can hang up in aluminum casting. tap gently-small hammer/punch. should have formed o-ring instead of gasket for mounting.hint--break out temp sender, heater hose fitting etc. while pump is still bolted solid unless you have BIG vise/work bench--paul

I heard if you put the bolts in the wrong location it can ruin the injector pump, big$$$$

I have heard this also. there are two bolts longer than the others 1/8 or 1/4 and they will hit the timing gears for the injector pump if put in the wrong place. check carefully before installing the bolts, there should be an instruction sheet warning you about this .Have fun

I have a 88 7.3, and if the water pump is the same, you need to do the following.
1) Get the ford fan wrench. You need to take the fan off, and the left hand threads on the fan require that wrench. 2) When you put it together, put the bolts in the exact same spot, and use thread sealer on them or you will be sorry. 3) If you change the T stat, get the OEM one, often the aftermarket ones are wrong.
