My best option for storing my dual axle equipment trailer is at an area (my rental property) which is semi-public, and accessible 24/7. I have a padlock on the ball hitch - but realize padlocks are just 10 seconds with bolt cutters.

I intend to remove one wheel and put the axle on blocks to increase the theft detereent. Anybody got better ideas?

The best option???

Insurance! I had a really nice roll-back trailer custom built with winch and everything. It wasn't cheap. I added it to the general policy I have on all my other equipment like tractors, JDGator, welders etc. It was less than $20 a year. Since I am well prepared for it I don't imagine anyone will bother stealing it.

Next best thing... I built 2 trailers in the past that I made the main part of the tongue out of large square tubing. I slid smaller square tubing with the hitch attached inside the larger square tubing and drilled the whole package for tractor pins. When you park the trailer, just take the tongue and hitch with you when you go. If they want to steal one with that setup then they'd really have to be prepared in advance.

Buddy of mine's FIL has a lot where he sells trailers. Where ever he gets them makes them all where they have ford ranger bolt patern hubs. He had a few get stolen even with no tires on them and chains. He set up camera. Got 3 boys on film that would have made any crew chief proud. They pulled up about 3 am, one with a floor jack and bolt cutters the other two with cordless impact wrenches and a wheel each. The guy with the jack picked up the trailer and cut chain while the other two got tires on. They tossed the jack in the back of the truck and were gone in less than 2 minutes. I wonder how many times they practiced that before they tried it? Betcha next time they cover the lisence plate with duct tape in case the next joint has a camera!

they do make locks/ covers that slide on the lip of the hitch. you slide it on there and take a screw driver to turn it so it won't slide off. then you put your key in and turn it until there is a cover over the screw. only the person wil the key can get it off. but if the theives are that ambitious, tehy will just loop the safety chains around the hitch and hook them onto their vehicle. or if they have a sawzall but what good is that gonna do if ya tryin' to get the trailer.

One word. LoJack. Check them out. At least you will most likely get it back. The thieves may even get put away for a day or two if you are lucky.

One way is to let the air out of the tires, make it look worthless. When you go to get it just bring an air compressor.

I'd go one further and remove the needle from the valve stem. Someone looking to steal it will need steel caps or will need to be carrying spare needles. who does that?

Paint your trailer in very garish colors.
If someone steals it it will be noticed.

yeah I saw a flaming pink trailer go down the road yesterday...

My brother was up at a lake water skying once and when they went to get the trailer the hitch was gone. People will pretty much steal anything.
Get some brush and hide it from the road no one will steal a big pile of brush. And the good part is they will put more on to help hide it for you.

As the old saying goes, if they want it bad enough they will get it. Possibly putting it upside down would slow them down a bit?

Where/when was the picture taken?
I saw a similar sight last New Years Eve along I-80 in Nebraska except the SUV was upside down and the trailer was on it's wheels.

Most of those little U-haul trailers have printed down on the right rear corner: "Do not exceed 45 MPH!" I've had them pass me on the Interstate doing 65-70 MPH! So much for warnings!

Chains, and more chains, chains through the wheels, around a post or tree. They will steal it if they want it, all you can do is to have so many chains or cables to cut, that the crooks will look for easier trailers to steal. We have had 3 trailers stolen, from our shop, not to mention several attempts at cuuting chains or locks.

Take all the tires off and leave it on blocks. Theives will pull the trailer down the road if it has three wheels.
