I posted this question on the Dieselplace forum and didn't get an answer, guess I don't have enough gadgets on my farm truck. My 2000 6.5 started when just cranked idleing at 1200 rpm's with fluttering for about 2 minutes and then slowing to normal rpm's. At same time it became every erattic to control speed with excellerator pedal. The longer it runs the better it gets but not like it used to be. Scan tool revealed no bad codes but rpm's on tool went down instead of up on excelleration. Thanks for any help,Tx Jim

Bob,I installed last year a PMD from Heath Diesel mounted and sealed on a heat sink. It's garuanteed for 7 years and I'm very hesitent to break the seal. To Paulsdiesel as stated no codes showed up when scanned. Someone at Dieselplace suggested cleaning grounds. Are there more grounds than just battery cables? I put out hay with it yesterday and it ran a little better. Thanks for all replies,Tx Jim

There are two power transistors in the Pump Mounted Driver (PMD/FSD). They are held in place with 4 tiny machine screws. Over a period of time, from thermal cycling of the aluminum heat sink, and vibration, the tiny nuts become loose, and the system acts just as you describe or WORSE.

Third Party Image

If you are an adventureous sort, you can remove the PMD and tighten the nuts, and, often, the module will operate as good as new for quite a while, otherwise, replace the PMD.

(Stanadyne originally called the unit a "PMD" "Pump Mounted Driver". It is sometimes (ESPECIALLY when remotely mounted) called an "FSD" "Fuel Solenoid Driver"... Two names for the same part.)

I have a 1993 HD2500 with 180,000 miles on it. It started getting where it would start up then die, RPM's would go up and down. Alot of cranking would get it started again as long as the battery lasted long enough, then it would run but act like the RPM's would surge up and down. My problem was the o-ring on the bottom of the filter base. It was leaking and causing it to get air. It would die and then with alot of cranking it would bleed itself.

injector pump optical sensor is suspect. may show po251 fault code.

Sounds like 2 different things to me. The 6.2/6.5s I've had have had a cold start feature that advances the timing and raises the RPM when cold. After a short warm up period the RPM should drop and there'll be a noticable change in the sharpness of the combustion sound of the engine as the timing goes back to its normal setting. Thats all normal.

The fluttering part sounds like a possible fuel issue. Diesels with mechanical pumps most often are hydraulicly governed and use the fuel as the hydraulic medium. You could be getting air in the line from small leak while its parked causing it to act like its low on fuel in the pump until the lift pump catches up. It might just be temerature related as well. 6.2/6.5s have in line fuel heaters just before the injector pump. The governor might be hunting some until some warmer thinner fuel makes its way into the pump.

If its starting fine and doesn't die and fail to restart I wouldn't worry about it too much.

It sounds like air in the system, but then it would run rough when started every time it sat for a day or so.Take it to a GM dealer. If it is the pump, they extended the pump warranty to 11 years or 120,000 mi.~brad

Brad,Thanks for the reply. If it has air in the system why would scan tool show rpm's going down instead of up on excelleration? If it was leaking back to tank will filter bowl be lower than normal? Local Chevy dealer is way behind plus truck has 140,000 miles on it! Does this truck have a cam or crank sensor? I previously had installed last year a remote PMD with a heat sink. Thanks again,Tx Jim
