My FIL just moved back to Iowa from West Central Minnesota. He is amazed by the amount of field drain tile that was installed here in central Iowa last fall. He was asking me what it cost to what I call pattern tile where the laterals run parallel at 50 to 60 ft apart throughout the whole field. I asked my dad and he didn't remember what it cost to just do the draws per running foot. I asked a guy at work that farms and he thought several years ago he remembered paying about $300 per acre to do it all. What about in your area? Also what is the projected payback for the cost?

It is up to about $500 to $600 per acre with spacing @ 50 feet using 4" laterals. A lot of mains up the price. This is in NC Iowa.

I do tile work here in nebraska and we charge $1.65 a foot for six inch tile and $1,45 a foot for 4inch with no sock. We con't really do any grid tile but that is what it would come to. If you figure it at 80 ft spacing it would come to about $800.00 per acre

Had a few thousand feet put in this June. Four, five, six inch plastic (no sock) tile was 27, 41, 66 cents per foot. Plowing in was 96 cents per foot, averaging about four feet deep with a laser-controlled plow. Installer had several tile price increases since last year. Tiling is money well spent.

I was taught...

1. A tile will drain 50 feet on either side per foot deep.
2. Keepin the slope of the tile running towards the river is crucial, you can put wet spots on high ground by tiling wrong. surveying is required, laser sights are a definite plus. 3. 4 feet deep is pretty good. You want it no less than 18 inches or the weight of farm equipment will crush the tile.
4. Once it's there, it's there forever. Cost doesn't matter, you can never have too much tile. Every dime given to a tile man is money well spent.

We pattern tiled about 30 acres last fall in south central Mn. Cost $13,000. We went every 80 ft. with at least 4 ft. ground cover. Should we have went closer?

Depends on soil type and how the land lies.

Here the tile are spaced at half the distance you refer to. The neighbors just tiled a complete 160 acres at close to 30-35 feet on the spacing. You need to remember this was knows as the great black swamp 150 years ago. Like Brad said it makes a definate difference on productivety of the farm. On the above mentioned farm this is the second year the new owners have owned the farm. This land is table top flat changes in elevation can be less than a foot in a half mile. We try to tile some every year.

Having grown up in north central North Dakota, the idea of tiling farmland is completely alien to me. We didn't have that kind of moisture to just let it go to waste. Too bad you can't drain it from Iowa to North Dakota, both ends would benefit greatly.

We're looking at about 12 grand to tile out a 25 acre parcel next year.Pattern tile every 60 feet.

Well drained soil is HUGE here in SE Minn.Yield monitors peak out right at the tile locations and taper off in between.Well tiled soil is the difference between $125 and $300/acre rent.

We are cursed/blessed that the drainage ditch runs through our property. The surrounding neighbors field mains have to run across our fields.Mains have to be good sized to keep up.Ours drains first.

We're still crunching the numbers as far as pay back time frame, but are scheduled in. ~brad
