In the last week or so, it has been taking a while to start, and it smells of raw fuel while parked. 3.1 V-6, 188,000 miles. Last tune up was around 125,000. Runs great, just has to crank a while to start. It seems like it loses fuel pressure while sitting. Was going to check on the fuel filter, does that function as a check valve? What else should I look for? Thanks!

Had a 318 Dodge-I know you are not talking about Dodge here, but. I was having a starting problem, smelled like fuel, etc. Every expert I talked to locally said fuel pump-thought the check valve had quit. Wouldn"t you know, the ignition coil completely quit-no fire at all. Replaced it, no more hard starting. Check your ignition system. Greg

Had a bad coil pack that sounds like your cold starting solution.

My vote is for the fuel pressure regulator as well. Check it like Bryan says, though if you don`t see any fuel it can still be bad. Then I would pull it off, hold it upside down and tap it on a clean rag. If you can see any fuel at all coming out of that vacuum port, it`s junk. The higher blends of ethanol in the gas tends to dry out the diaphram. Good luck

I would start with a good tuneup. It may be flooding the engine after the engine is stopped is the reason you need to crank so much. You need to get a diagram of that fuel system to determine if there's a pressure regulator. I had to change the fuel pump on a Chevy with throttle body injection (TBI). The engine would just quit, but would always restart. Always thought it was a fuel problem, so I silver soldered a 1/8 pipe fitting on the steel fuel line from the filter to measure the fuel pressure. It had about 10 or 11 psi until I accelerated and the pressure dropped. Pulled the tank and pump and the pump sock was covered in rust & dirt. I cleaned the tank and installed a new pump. No problem after that. Hal

check valve is part of fuel pump in tank . Sounds like you may have bad fuel pressure regulator . Pull vacuum line off reg , crank engine. If you see any fuel out of vac port ,reg is bad. Will cause hard start , fuel smell, etc .
