Hi All , I need to get a different web browser for this old machine that was originally designed for windows xp pro but now has been rebuilt with 98se with a much smaller hard-drive than original ( 60 gig down to 10 gig ) . I currently use netscape and I still have IE on here but was looking at the Firefox 2.0 browser . I just don't really like the usability of IE and it's so S L O W on dialup . Netscape is at least twice as fast for me . I just found out that netscape is no more as of Feb. , that mozilla firefox is the recommended replacement mainly because that's the base for both browsers but it's also a product of AOL which also owned netscape I guess . I don't like the idea of anything AOL on my computer but netscape has served me well and until tonight I didn't know that AOL really owned the build so I guess ignorance is bliss . So if firefox is a good browser I'll use it . I've heard of linux but haven't looked into it . It is a browser isn't it ? Thanks for any opinions . ...Randy

Sounds like we are both having problems with computors, mine is about dead and having to get a new one. Still wanting to get those pictures to you, maybe if we get a new system will be able to email them to you instead of getting them printed off and snail mail, printing costs are expencive. The hound is doing better with people. If we take her someplace (car sickness has stoped) she gettes along good, not overly friendly but OK with people. If she is shut in and doesen't see people come in and let out later she is OK with them but if she see watches them come she dosen't want anything to do with them and raises a fuss. Building on to the house has taken all my time this summer, got nothing else done but go to work. Leroy

Hi Leroy , Yeah , I can't afford a new computer right now . This one works OK but technology is leaving it behind . Happy to hear the pup's growing out of her distrust . She needs to meet as many friendly people as possible on your place and off . Females are naturally more protective of their " stuff " . We got a couple new pups ourselves . The youngest is now 4 months old - a miniature poodle and a 8 month old Pembroke Welsch Corgi. Our Siberian husky is near death and the Dalmation , Rottweiler , the smallest sheltie and terrier are all getting pretty old themselves . We're back up to 14 dogs again . We had two possums but the latest one is one that was burned when I burned the pile of trees and it didn't make it , the other one is blind and doing very well and eats very gently from our hands and comes when called . Trying to get the rest of them off the property though because of the horses . Still looking forward to some pictures . ...Randy

Personally I like Safari best. Its available now for windows and is faster than even Firefox. Its free so why not give it a try.

The last time I went to AVG to get my free virus blocker they wanted to make me subscribe to some trial offer postage stamp website before they would let me go on. Am I missing something or are we going to have to play games now to get the free?

Hey Iowa -

Sounds like you could have a virus already.

Some malware and/or viruses these days hijack your computers ability to go to many security related sites.

Try this link - it is valid on my PC:

Good luck,

I still use and like the older Mozilla This is the one that contains both the browser and the mail program The newer Firefox and thunderbird are great but are bigger than I need. I think the newer version of Mozilla is seamomkey or something like that. Just look at the Mozills web site. Amother vote for free AVG for virus checker.

Firefox is a product of the Mozilla Foundation, a tax-exempt organization that was originally funded by AOL but is now independent of them.

I highly recommend Firefox. By default it blocks most pop-ups. And one of its best features is that you can change how it works by downloading what they call "add-ons". There are two add-ons and one configuration change I always recommend for Firefox:

Adblock - almost all banner adds are removed from web pages. Really cleans things up. After you install it you should subscribe to one of the sites that track banner ads so your browser will recognize and block them (I use EasyList); these subscriptions are free.

FlashBlock - replaces Flash animations with a small icon. If you want to see the animation you can click on the icon, otherwise all that jumping, flashing, blinking junk is never shown

Image.animation_mode - on the address line type about:config to see the various settings. Find this one and change it from Normal to None. This stops a lot of the animated graphics that are part of the web pages you visit (as opposed to the advertising that are really different sites linked in).

First off Linux is an operating system just like WinXp and Win98.

I worked at an internet company for 7 years up till last Dec when they closed our office and the Techsupport people always chose Firefox over anything else. So I think this speaks highly of it. Opera is another good choice, But I have never used it.

Netscape was bought out by AOL a while ago and AOL started putting their hooks into it, making it bigger, more bloated, and slower. Firefox is based on the same Mozilla code but with out all the hooks and is much faster. If you want to get rid of Outlook Express checkout Thunderbird for email.

onefarmer, I just sent you an email but after reading Randy's question I have some more for you. What is Firefox and what is it supposed to do? Or the other things mentioned? Do not know if I have any of that stuff now or not. I am on internet explorer for email now and several years ago Char signed up for McAffe before I new it as it was doing nothing but causing problems and we did not renew it but it is still causing problems everytime I try to use this computor. And after it was installed it seems like was when it started slowing down.

I have heard that Opera is good, but I have used Firefox for at least 4 yrs. now and like one other fellow said, I have not looked back. I wouldn't get rid of IE as sometimes websites are displayed differently and is good to be able to check out the appearance on each one. I do armature web design for our old tractor club and need to check out the page between a few of the browsers. Firefox is faster, safer, but I'm not sure for how long, seems like when something good comes out the hackers go right after it. Firefox has some neat free add ons that really help out your browsing experience. And I love the tabbed browsing. Check out Firefox below.

95% of my browsing is now done on Opera. I used to have all sorts of virus, spyware etc problems when using IE but I have abandoned all my antivirus-spyware-adware type defenses since I moved to Opera about a year ago. I now enjoy browsing like I did in the heady days before viruses.

Opera has some nice features for dial-up users. You can see the data-stream, its speed and DIRECTION. One feature that I like is to enlarge a web page and its zoom feature enlarges not only the text but the pictures as well (up to 1000%).

I do use IE for the odd webpage that uses active-x features especially when sending an email. In that case I just switch over to IE, do the reply, then back into Opera.

Hope this helps and good luck

I've been using Firefox for several years. If you're willing to do away with IE altogether it'll save you some space on your hard drive. On mine the Mozilla Firefox folder is about 25 MB while the IE is 43. Used to be that you had to keep IE because some websites didn't work right with Ff. I haven't hit one of those in a long time, though. About all the developers have caught on to Ff.
Firefox had tabbed browsing long before IE and seems to have a better working system. It really helps with discussion fora to be able to pick several threads at once instead of having to go back and forth to the index.
The newer version also has an unobtrusive real time spell check while you're typing a reply. Helps a lot with the typos. Good luck, Wm

Firefox.

Add AVG Free virus protection, AdAware and SUPERAntiSpyware (Both also free) and yer covered. Haven't even had a hint of a problem since I went to that combination.

Firefox, hands down. Been using it exclusively for years and I've never looked back.

If you want to play with Linux, try the "Live CD" version of Ubuntu, IF your computer is capable of booting from from the CD.

There is still another browser worth looking at: Opera. IE is so closely tied to the Windows OS, it makes infection from viruses too easy. Along the same lines, use Mozilla Thunderbird for email instead of Outlook Express.

Linux is not a browser. Linux is an operating system. You don't need Windows at all if you want to run linux. But it's a lot different than windows. If you got a spare computer and lots of free time, you can do a lot with it. I wouldn't play with linux much on your main computer though--you have to re-partition your hard drive. When I ran it that meant starting clean and reinstalling windows too, but they might have gotten that NTFS-partition-resize thing figured out in the last 4 years. (I ran linux for almost 8 years, and then I just didn't have time for it anymore.)

Netscape is going away? I hadn't heard that.

Yes Firefox is based on the same core that Netscape is--at least, it was a couple years ago when I last was keeping track.

Anything but IE will help keep you from getting lots of nasty stuff on your computer. But remember to use Ad-Aware regularly and keep a virus checker.

Yeah I never did like hearing about that super-huge mega-merger where Sun, Netscape, and AOL merged. I was already thinking the writing was on the wall for Sun, and bundling IE with windows really hurt Netscape.

You should still be able to find all the netscape you want on oldversion.com - one of my favorites. I used to really like v1.22, it seemed the snappiest on dialup.

One thing i like about Firefox is that if you hit the Ctrl and the + key you can inlarge the text as big as you want. Makes reading a lot better.

Uncle Tom, I do appreciate the tip about the ctrl and + shortcut. I guess this only shows my lack of savvy about computers because I didn't know this but I do appreciate learning of it. Saves a lot of squinting! By the way, we use Mozilla Firefox and are very satisfied with it. Also use IncrediMail for e-mail and this is good too. Thanks again for the tip.

Pat
