The injector pump on a friend's '99 Dodge went up and needs replacement. The shop quoted $2,500.00 to install new injector and lift pumps. Replacement parts kits run about $1,500.00. So...does it take a master diesel mechanic to do this job? Or can any decent mechanic do it?

Thanks.

Go to dieseltruckresource.com print the instructions for the VP44. lost of folks there have done their own. you might find a better price on the pump also.

Tell your friend to put in some kind of low pressure warning kit on while he is working on it. BD Diesel Performance makes an inexpensive kit that will tell you when fuel pressure to the main pump falls below 8psi. That away he'll know when the lift pump goes next time before it ruins the main pump. $50 is much better than $1500.

I think there is a special puller needed for the drive gear but otherwise I don't think it's too big of a job. I would suggest you try to talk him into putting a FASS lift pump on it instead of the factory pump and I'd advoid the in tank pump at all costs from what I've been hearing.

I'm thinking a good way to lose a friend is to get involved in his 99 Dodge diesel.

Mine went out and that is exactly what it cost without the lift pump. The lift pump is around $190 for the pump. My injector pump was $1500 also. I would not trust a rookie with a $1500 pump.

I have installed a lot of those pumps. They are not bad to do. An experienced tech with a good selection of tools and a manual shouldn't have a problem. Make sure and get the in tank replacement lift pump kit. Also, be sure and properly torque the injector pump shaft nut. Ted

I don't think it takes a lot of knowledge but there are a few tricks to it from what I have heard. You have to take the nut off the pump shaft through a cover and when you get the nut off you have to make sure the shaft keyway is facing upward so the key won't fall off when you pull the pump out. There is a bracket that is kind of hard to get to on the pump. Then I think you just unbolt and unplug the pump connections and remove it and just put the new one back in it's place and reconnect everything. From what I hear it is usually the lift pump that goes out and that takes the VP44 out because of lack of lubrication. My brother's went out and his truck would still run but it would only roll start. There is a site call dieseltruckresource.com that would probably have a lot of information if you did a search on that. Hope this helps some.
