Ever run into anything like this? I have several auction going right now for textbooks I no longer need. Listed a new text from the publisher that I never opened and it went up pretty high. Along comes a guy with zero feedback who bids it up $2 at a time until he has it $12 higher and then quits WITHOUT being the high bidder. Then he shoots me a question saying he wants the book and how much will I take for it AND will I send him all the answers to the problems (I have them). I replied that the book is overpriced and he should look elsewhere. The e-mail address is not valid.
This guy has been an ebay member since Nov 2005 and has zero feedback. What the heck?

I don't see what the big deal is,tell the guy if he wants the book to bid on it,and if he wins and sends you the money, then send him the book,No big deal.

Don't think I would worry about him. He might think that you are shilling (running up your own item). Lot of people thing every thing is rigged. Just let it sell to the highest bidder. E-bay tends to over sell a lot.

he most likely changed his name and it shows zero for that name but has the date he originally joined Ebay. I did that one time because I changed my email address and couldn't figure out how to change it on Ebay so i lost all the feed back i had but I still have the same date that I first joined.
I think that you can research it but not sure how.
Walt
Anyway I only respond to the highest bidders the other can just bid higher or go to well can't say that.

Best advice is to ignore it and place on the blocked bidder list like Rusty mentioned.

Not even worth your time trying to figure it out or reporting it to Ebay.
Ebay is ripe with scammers and as long as they are not hurting Ebay's bottom line there is nothing they will do about them.

Since he is NOT the high bidder, I would not give any more replies than you already have, and then place that buyer on your blocked bidder list.

That is a great idea! I searched all over and can't find a link to doing it though. Whereabouts on ebay do I find this?

Up in the right hand corner of any ebay page, just under "help" click on "site map". In the center column, where it says "sell", the blocked bidder thing is about the second item down.

If you think about it for a few minutes, there are a few weird people in this world so naturally a few would probably make it on eBay.
