Hey,
I need some quotes to include in an essay I am entering to get a trip to Washington, DC sponsored by the FFA(Future Farmers of America). The topic is SAE(Supervised Agricultural Experience) Risk Management, and I am wondering if anyone can give me some quotes by yourself about an Agricultural related job that you are doing and or have done. I will not quote you directly, but this would definetly help me get a good start and get my point accross in this essay.
Thanks for your help!

Country living advice

Life is simpler when you plow around the stumps.

A bumble bee is faster than a John Deere tractor.

Trouble with a milk cow is...she won"t stay milked.

Don"t skinny dip with snapping turtles.

Two can live as cheap as one...if one don"t eat.

Don"t wrestle with pigs. You"ll get all muddy and the pigs will love it.

To know how country folk are doin, look at their barns, not their houses.

Life ain"t about how fast you run, or how high you climb. It"s about how good you bounce.

No, you probably won"t outrun that bull.

Plant your corn early.

Do your cultivating while it's dry, because you can't get through the field when it's muddy.

Some folks around here won't plow tobacco when it is very dry, and the weeds will take it. I have heard lots of old men say to cultivate when it is dry.

I would join FFA if it wasnt for the guy in charge of it. He's a prick. He thinks he knows everything(he doesnt), and he will write you up for saying the word crap. He even wrote his own son up for hugging a girl in school. If It wasnt for him, I would love to join the FFA. I just couldnt deal with that teacher or any of his classes on a day to day basis. I would be in ISS before the end of the first week.

What noble work is plowing, with the broad and solid earth for material, the ox for fellow-laborer, and the simple but efficient plow for tool !

Work that is not done in any shop, in a cramped position, work that tells, that concerns all men, which the sun shines and the rain falls on, and the birds sing over !

Henry David Thoreau- Journal
1857

These words appear on a book marker I'm using. Just substitute the word tractor for ox and it's still relevant.

Turn it hard both ways, and come straight back.
Just kidding. Try this.

They will beat their swords into plowshares and spears into pruning hooks. Nation will nottake up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore. Isaiah 2:4 and Micah 4:3.

I was feeding my horses and my dog ran between the horses legs. My horse went to kick the dog and got me square in the hip. Picked my 200# butt up about 6 feet in the air and out about 10 feet from where I 'WAS" standing. I dont do that anymore!

I would do a story on the bee's and pollination. It has been all over the news that the bee stock is dwindling. I dont know if its true or not but it would make for a great essay that I bet would be original!

Oh and also my dad used to say "We got done with this combine last year, why wouldn't we get done next year"
That was his explanation when I suggested we get a more modern combine like the neighbors had.

I taught tractor safety to 4h kids a few years back it was important to me that the younger kids had a chance to see how dangerous farm and related jobs could be.If it saved one kid from a accident it was well worth it.

Here's a couple for you:

1. "Let us not forget that the cultivation of the earth is the most important labor of man." ..... Daniel Webster.

2. "I have walked many a weary mile behind a plow and I know all the drudgery of it." ..... Henry Ford

3. "The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in the harvest and have nothing." ..... Proverbs 20:4

4. "Those who wish eternal knowledge shall visit the YT website for inspiration." ..... . Crazy Horse

I am Dr. James A. Nicholson (Ph.D.) you can quote me.
Agricultural employment, including supervised situations like cooperative education, etc. is inherently dangerous. The primary ingredients in this danger are in my opinion the following factors:
1} Moving heavy machinery and vehicles with human foot traffic in the immediate area.
2} Complex activities with multiple independent actions taking place in confined spaces.
3} Limited prior exposure to the agricultural context on the part of the person gaining "experience".
4} Expectations on the part of the Farmer/supervisor that they are being listened to with understanding while supervising inexperienced workers.
5} Methods used (by the supervisor)from habit and practice that are far from reasonable for a novice, let alone an experienced worker (they have been lucky for a long time)
6} The novices expectation of safety based on the expectations of stocking shelves, or making fries.
7} The laziness of either the supervisor or learner, or both, in the proper safety practices and equipment use.
8} Animals (both pets, and livestock) that are unpredictable and spontaneous, causing disruption in expected motion or a hazard due to their actions.
9} Attitude of the learner that fails to rely on the wisdom of the supervisor.
10} The fact that supervision is not able to be eyes on for the entire work period. This results in independent thinking on the learners part. Not the best policy for safety.
11} Chemicals and waste materials may not be understood in appropriate context for use by a novice. Handling them can cause poisoning and contamination.
12} Safety can be a remote effect caused by inexperienced agricultural activity that affects consumers. Bacteria in vegtables causing illness.
13} Communication difficulties (both language and contextual) that reduce the effective transfer of safety content to the learner.

If a newspaper fails to land on the porch, no issue. If the pitchfork is tossed into the doorway it can kill.

I hope these are the essence of your question, many come from my 4H background (as a 4Her, and adult leader) and experiences as a Professor in Technology lab conditions as well as Ag related experience. Good Luck, JimN

Puts me in mind of a time when I was grooming a horse in a narrow tie stall with a window at the head of it. Barn cat jumped through the window "unpredictably and spontaneously" causing a severe "disruption in expected motion" and a "hazard due to" his actions. Horse ended upside down in the stall, cat was not seen for three days. I was standing out in the aisle and could not explain to anyone who came a-runnin how it was I got there. THAT got the heart to pumpin! Well....you said we could quote you!

Hi Dave,

I had a good friend that died doctoring a horse. One day I pulled up and he was giving a shot to a strange horse without hobbling or restraining him. I mentioned to my bud that he was taking a huge risk doing that.

Six months latter he was giving his own horse a shot and got kicked in the head. They said he died instantly.

I'm sorry I don't have anything to help you, but I thought I'd let you know that FFA no longer stands for Future Farmers of America. The acronym was dropped in the 80's because there's way more careers in agriculture than just farmers. I was a very proud member for 6 years (lucky enough to have a Jr. High chapter) so I've been where you are and good luck!!

When I was a Washington state FFA officer in 1965, a discussion was had on changing the name to "Future Farmers and Agriculturalists", to modernize the name and make it more relevant, while retaining the same initials so everyone would not have to buy a new jacket. The idea was turned down, primarily on the intellectual ground that "it just sounds too dorky."

It still stands for Future Farmers of America, they are having issues on changing the name for legal resons and such. I belive what your thinking of is that during that era they changed they updated there views on ag. Some of the new proposed were Future for agriculture was one that i could recall that was passed around. I was at one of the nationals confrences work shops that talked about that issue again.

Yes they do down play it now, the whole problem that they were having was to do with get a new name that they would not get the same reconigtion that they had recived now. It really complecated and is always brought up every so many years at nationals and state conventions, but they always hit a wall with the "political jargin" kind of sad really.

Good to see someone who is active in the FFA :) Im trying to think of a good quote for you, I would look to see if George Washington had any ones related to ag. he is used to beinvoled in ag thoughout his life and his bust is used to represnt the tres. as you to. I was vice pres. of my chapter in high school and i recall useing a quto by Abe Lincoln "I do not think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday..." that was in a speach i made at a banquet. The topic of the speech was the new ag. I wish i could be more help to you. But anyway its good to see that you are active in the FFA cause i know for me it has made a huge impact on my life. I am currently persuing a carrer in vo ag teacher.

Best of Luck
