I enjoy outdoor cats. Up until last night we had one cat (who's name was Grumpy). The garage door (attached house) had been open. At bedtime my son closed the door (using electric door opener) and went in the house. I came home rather late from my brother's dairy farm to see what looked from a distance like a piece of dirty insulation hanging down from the top of the door frame. As I drove closer to the garage I could see it was our two-year-old pet cat...hanging from its head! He had apparently been atop the open door and was unable to get down quickly enough as the door closed. It was a gruesome sight. I rather quickly opened the door enough for him to drop to the ground, went to the shed, got the pitchfork, and took a rather somber walk into the woods with our now deceased friend.

We grew up on a busy road so cat tragedies from fast moving cars were all too common. We also lost them to the haymower, conditioner, machinery wheels, etc., but never to a closing garage door. I can't understand it yet. Like all cats, he was so nimble. Besides being Grumpy, he also had the title of Building Inspector. Whatever project or repair I did he was always the final word in quality control; carefully checking out every angle. He could climb most surfaces and went up and down ladders and trees in all directions. The only explanation I can think of is he was asleep when the door began to close, and simply did not wake up in time to jump to safety.

All five of us are really going to miss our Tabby Friend. Tonight's activities involve going to the local Shelter and beginning the quest for a new Inspector. Normally inspectors are not noted for having friends, but this guy was a class act. If anything wasn't up to standard he was sure to stay nearby and re-inspect when the necessary improvements were made.

Thank you for listening.
Glenn F.

Here's a photo of my little buddy Jasper Jones. He fetches anything you throw, last night it was a golf tee, night before it was a small stick he pulled out of the kindling pile near the fireplace. He sleeps on my feet, loves to wrap himself up in towels...He's a great cat.

I have lost a few good ones. One a calico female that was the best mouser I ever saw! She was very small even though fully grown, but ate 12 mice in a row in less than 3 min. I never saw anything like it! She attacked the nest and had one pinned under each paw and swallowed them whole and would eat one from under the paw and smack down another. Poor thing turned into a butterball and could hardly walk! We think a hawk got her as we saw a hawk carrying something off in the distance and we never saw her again. Lost another last year. Black and white with a mustache. Was wild when he showed up, but soon tamed down and was a good buddy. He would sit on the wood pile and watch me work and when I took a break he came over to get rubbed. He also would sleep on my chest when I would take a snooze at 3 in the afternoon. That really puts me to sleep! He got ran over by a dumba$$ who was flying all over town in a beatup old ford pickup doing burnouts.word must have got out that I was madder than a hornet as the guy and his truck disappaered from town. We had another cat show up here two weeks after chuck got hit. call him tater as he like potatos, but also call him punkin for his color. He alwasy sleeps at my feet while I am on the couch and get this, he is housebroke! goes to the door and meows to go poop, good deal as I don"t even have a litterbox anymore! He also watches me work from the wood pile and comes over to get rubs. He is a good mouser and last fall he sat by the stove for two days. I kept wondering why, till he nailed what he knew was there. Got him to shake hands too! I hope you find a good one Glenn. If you get lucky maybe a good one will show up at your door!

I'm sorry to hear that, I have 5 cats and love them all to death. One of them, Jasmine, is an indoor/outdoor kitty that rode home with me on my 4 wheeler one day from the neighbor's. She was starved and sick and we nursed her back to health and had her fixed. She loves to hang out with me in the garage, the barn, wherever I happen to be. She sits on the seat of the tractor while I'm working on it, goes up into the attic of the garage and kills mice, sleeps on the hood of my truck...she's great. I hope you find a good replacement for your Kitty.

First of all, sorry to hear of the loss. We lost the best mouser cat we ever had about a year ago, found him dead in the grader ditch where he often did catch mice. Wouldn't have bothered me so much if he had been dead on the road, but when the car tracks go down into the ditch, it was an intentional kill. Never will understand the perverse pleasure some people get killing domestic animals. I am a NRA member, and have no issue with controlling preditors like coyotes or pests like opossums and coons.I also believe deer season should be longer along with we should have deer rifle instead of just bow and shotgun, etc. But, getting off topic of cat, the cat we have now goes in and out of the garage at her leisure, leave the door up just enough for it to get in and out. 37 chief you nailed it. I like kitty cats but wife has allergies. Might have to get a barn cat though cause we got voles and mice last summer. Do they all die over winter? Hope so. Just varmints not kitties.

Hi Glenn , Sorry about your friend . Cats can be so frustrating yet worm their way into your affections ! We have somewhere around twenty cats and 14 dogs . A couple of years ago I got in my pickup to go into town which is about nine miles away during a real heavy snow storm . The snow was 4-6 inches deep when I left . I'm two miles from the blacktop on a gravel road. So on the return trip about an hour later just as I turn off the blacktop onto the gravel I had to swerve out of the ruts to miss something black buried in the snow . I got curious and backed up to it , got out and found out it was a black cat huddled in the rut and covered in snow . It didn't really want anything to do with me but I didn't want to leave it there to freeze so I finally got it into the truck and went home . My wife asked me at the door why I was carrying such and such ( I don't remember the cats name ) into the house . I told her where I found it and she said it was our cat . I guess it got up under the truck and rode till I stopped at the stop sign to turn onto the blacktop . There was another one that rode under my truck all the way into town one morning , down the interstate for two miles , through town to the hardware store I stopped at and then on to where I was working at on the far side of town ( about another two miles through five stoplights ) and stayed on that truck for another hour while I was at work . I was working at a wastewater treatment plant at that time doing some indoor pipe layout when one of the city guys comes in and asks if I owned any cats . We went outside and sure enough there was one of our cats . She had crawled up under the cities pickup . Had to take an hour off to get her home . They both came through things scared but unharmed . Sorry for the lack of names but with that many cats names don't make much difference . They all come if we holler " here kitty , kitty " . I know a few of their names and actually my wife has a name for all of them but I don't know them . I will say that with as many cats as we have and have had a truely special one is hard to come by . We had one like that a couple of years ago but he decided to curl up and nap in the shade of the rear truck tire , he didn't make it , that broke both of us up . He would ride on my shoulders as I did my chores and never ever use his claws if he lost his grip and he'd just be purring the whole time . ...Randy

Since you mentioned cats riding on vehicles. When my Dad was raising hay, on one trip delivering hay,he thought he herd a cat, and didn't think much of it. After arriving with the load of hay about 20 mi away, there was our cat on top of the load. The cat came home in the cab. My cat came up missing. I put a add in the paper, someone calls about 30 mi away, and said we may have your cat. Sure enough it was our cat. It must have jumped in someone's car visiting the neighbors, and went home with them. I was at a resturant having breakfast, there is the same cat walking around in the parking lot. He decided to sleep in my car, and didn't wake up until I arrived at the resturant. Stan

I would rather have one that can romp around and be a cat rather than just mope around the house all day long. We shut ours in the garage at night to protect him against foxes, and he is like a missle to get out in the mornings to go do whatever cats do. He sounds alot like your cat, whenever one of us is working outside he is always right beside you checking things out (it has to pass the sniff test before they get a pass) as you do them. It would be very hard to lose the little bugger.

I know there are alot of peole that would love to give away some of their barn cats, especially to a good home.

We had an orange cat, name of Squint! He'd sit in a window and squint at the birds on the bird feeders. He'd go out at night, and some mornings he'd come wandering in, after chasing his ladies all night. sometimes, he'd come home with a wound or two, or an ear torn up, or his tail would have another kink in it! But, he wanted back out, after a period of rest. Then he got to staying away for several days, and always looking like he had fought the cat wars. Last time he visited, old Squint looked like a victim of the Boer War. Came crawling up to the door, but wouldn't come in. We fed him, and he stayed several days, then left, and we never saw him again. Many months later, i was down by the "back Forty", and there in the weeds, was ol' Squints pelt and bones. Nothing left to bury, but i knew it was him by his crooked tail! Kinda shed a tear, and went on. So, to replace Squint, we got another kitten from friends. Wife sez:"Make sure it is a male!" So, we went to get a kitten from friends. The guy picked up the kitten, looked underneath, read the label and sez:"This ones a male". At this point, i must tell you, that guy was NOT an expert on animals! His so-called Pygmy goat wasn't! His horse was one too! It wasn't, as he found out later! As soon as the kitten was old enough to leave its mother, we took it home. Named it Fred! Soon as i checked it, i told my wife it wasn't a male! She told me i didn't know anything about the issue. So, when Fred was old enough to be fixed, my wife left it at the Veterinarians office, and went to lunch with her girl friend. Along about ten, the Drs office called and told me Fred wasn't Fred, Fred was Fredrica! Now, you have to know my wife! If she thought there was any way for me to change Fred's you know, she'd blame me. So, in order to stay out of the fray, when my wife came home, i told her to call the Drs. office! And thats how Fred became Fredrica! But, we call her Fred for short!

Sounds a lot like my wife's blunder! Few years ago got a new kitten, raised it to that age. She took it to the vet, and said spay her. Got home the phone's ringing off the wall, "Jackie is a boy!"

Wife sez, "Do it anyway!"

Sorry that your cat didn't survive. We had the same thing happen to ours only it got it back leg caught between the door and the top frame. It hung there for about 5 hours until we got home again. We took her to the vet and there was no damage. I think she lost a couple of her nine lives. Hope you find a good replacement at the shelter. Wish more people would do what you are, there are so many being put to sleep before anyone takes them.

That is a terrible loss and everyone feels like they should have done something different to prevent the loss. They seem to get into the such crazy situations what with their curiousity and search for a good place to nap.

We lost one to a car hit, another to a boat trailer tire, another to being under the hood and into the fan belt, another to a coyote, another to just forgot and left the door open, one wouldn't get off the banjo housing on the wifes car so she just went shopping and left him there, and finally lost one to the Chinese wheat bad cat food.

I had one climb into the space behind the refrigerator that was left when I moved the refrigerator out to plug it into a portable generator. When the power came back on I unplugged the generator and proceeded to try and push the rfrigerator back into position against the wall. You guessed it, Jack the black cat was snoozing back there. I tried and tried to get that frig back into place by pushing on it hard but it just wouldn't go. As soon as I pulled it back out Jack jumped out non the less for wear.

I bet if I went to the Humane Society and they knew our history with cats they wouldn’t let us have another one.

We feel for you, it's not pleasant losing a friend. Our cat, I'll call her Wacky cat but Ma calls her Freckles, came running up the drive 2 years ago quite thin and being chased by 2 dogs. I didn't want a cat around as I am lergick to em but the wife was sick at the time and I thought it would cheer her up as long as it stayed outside. As you can guess, she wasn't outside long, as a matter of fact I don't believe she even spent that first night outside and not a one since. Well we had it spayed and have to tell you, she is the best mouser in the area. Always bringing her catches up to the door. She is a dear but I am still lergick to her. Would hate to see something to her. Best of luck finding a replacement for yours, luckily my garage doors roll down and don't swing down as I assume yours do. Well good luck, Kent in KS.

We would be heartbroken if any accident befell any of them. If they are insige they are much more safe. Mr. Bob
