Allis B brakes

The '53 Allis B I just inherited has individual, mechanical brakes, but they are terrible! I was backing down a hill and ran into my load. Several dozen operating hours (but twenty years) ago I helped my father replace the brake shoes, which helped not a wit. Is this the standard braking performance for this tractor, or is something wrong? If these typically had poor braking, is there a way to improve it? For example, by changing the lever arms?

If the adjusting screw is not rusted fast you might be able to tighten them up. They will never be as good stopping when backing up as going forward. When I was pulling and loading and unloading my b's and C's several times each weekend I could slide the tires going down the ramps forward but the tires would not slide going down back wards. Not that I wanted to slide them backing down. That is just the way that style of brake band works.

Thanks so much for the tips! When it warms up some, I'm going to investigate.

Tractor brakes for the most part are not all that good. But on all the Bs and Cs I have had the brakes worked well enough to lock up the wheels so you probably have some thing wrong or you have oil on the brake bands
