I have a three point mounted post hole auger that I would like to convert to hydraulic drive and mount on my new to me skidloaders bucket. Anyone who as used a three point auger knows that they are a pain to use on any ground that is not level. Has anyone done this or could post some pictures? I'am guessing it will take a low speed high torque motor and a flexable coupler and a creative braket to mount the motor. I just can't justify the $2000 for a factory built auger unit.

I put my old 3PH auger on the loader bucket and mounted a regular orbit motor to the pto input shaft on the gear box. Ended up only drilling three post holes with it, so it was not tested that well, but it did work. The holes were dug in heavy dry black soil in a fence row. It worked kinda slow but the motor did pull it. The tractor was a 630 JD so there wasn't much hyd pressure or flow to the motor compared to what a newer tractor or skid loader can deliver.Jim

Lots of these are made commercially. I am pretty good at fabbing machinery, but I bought a commercially made unit that uses a standard 2-9/16 augur drive pin, that way can always get an augur for it. In fact, I now have augurs from 3" to 30" and a 12"/24" tree planting augur. Every time I see a size I don't have at an auction, I pick it up if it goes cheap. If you insist on making your own, you will need to know both pressure PSI and flow GPM of your loader. Also you should hook it up on a swivel two ways, so it will self level in any position. If you need hydraulic parts, Surpluscenter.com has a large selection, reasonable.

Good luck if you're gonna set posts anywhere but in the yard. I fenced 80 acres 5 years ago. Borrowed my brothers Bobcat and auger. Thing was absolutely worthless. I went and bought a 3pt auger of my own. Get that skidsteer in to low wet ground and you're done for. You can't push yourself out like you can with a bucket.

Why wouldn`t you direct couple the motor to the auger in the same way that the right angle drive is attached? Let the motor swing with the auger and the coupling will be much simpler and more durable.

I wonder if the motor would stand up to the end and side thrust from the auger? All the commercial ones I've seen have some sort of gear box or hub to take the thrust instead of the motor. I hear you rrlund but with hydraulic drive I could also mount it to my loader tractor bucket for the really tough areas. I haven't made up my mind what I will do but I am tired of always cranking the three point lift arms on my three point trying to get straight holes on my hills.

I've drilled about a zillion holes with a skidsteer auger. With the construction industry on the low side right now you should be able to get a good deal on a used factory built unit.

A three point auger is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. I remember years ago having one on a JD 300B. Worthless and slow, only slightly better than digging by hand.

If you get a factory unit not only will it be engineered to do the job but you can also push yourself out if you get stuck. As with any skidder, go in forward so you can push yourself out. Good luck.

Dad made post hole diggers out of the hydraulic wheel drive motor from a Versatile swather. Mounted the auger direct to it.

Dunno if other brands of swathers will work or not.
