Just outside DC, in northern Virginia, you"ll find quite a few sites for those of us interested in farming, but they are somewhat scattered; you"ll need a car to get around. These next three below are located a half-hour or so outside the city. The first one that comes to mind is Frying Pan Farm Park, not too far from Dulles Airport in Fairfax County. They have a web site: Link Another site that"s very near the previous is the Sully Farm: Link Over in the next county (Loudoun County), just outside Leesburg, is the Oatlands Plantation: Link Mount Vernon, just south of Alexandria, is a great way to spend an afternoon. Lots to do and see there, and the view of the Potomac from the front porch is very nice. If you have time, a trip to the Eastern Shore of Maryland would take you into some farm country that is still very active. Take Route 50 East, go through Annapolis and across the bridge, and head toward Salisbury. I think Perdue does a lot of poultry farming there, and in the summer you"ll see all kinds of roadside stands with fresh produce. Near Federalsburg there"s a big show every spring (not sure when) with old tractors, steam traction engines, threshers, etc. Hope the above links go through, and enjoy your trip!
