I'm looking at a carry all and wondering whether to make my own or buy one already made. I don't weld, so would have to hire that out. It would basically be made from 3 x 3 x 3/16" or 1/4" angle with forks on the bottom and uprights to attach a 3ph. An additional piece would need to be welded across for the top link. I can get the material for around $50-55 plus lift pins. What would be a fair price to weld it up? I can buy the ready-built for less that $120.00 all painted and ready to go. Supposed to carry 1,000 pounds. Thanks.

Larry

Thanks for all the responses. What I plan to use the carry all for is hauling firewood out that I can't get to with the truck,(too wet, too many trees to turn the truck around, etc) carrying a 55 gal drum of water for the dogs in my training field, hauling fence posts, etc. I have a TO 30 for a tractor.

If you get a carry all. You can use 6 2x8x8' treated lumber to deck it out.

Cut the pieces at 64" long. Then you can use the 32" piece short ends for the verticle back plate. Just buty them together in the middle and support the joint with a 2x6.

I may be able to send pictures if you would liek on what I did.

You probably can"t make one for what retalilers sell them for. Won"t make a fork lift out of your tractor, but they are darned handy for lots of light lifting, carrying projects around the farm.

I bought one last summer. Skip the chain store where the King Kutter is and go out to a local owner operated feed mill/ag supplier and see what they have.

Tell them what you want and ask what it would cost if you paid cash.

I got a carry all that had been setting under a grain grinder, Said he wanted $110.00 I asked if he'd take $75.00 cash, He rubbed his beard, asked cash?, I said yep and started to pull out some $20's and he said $80.00? He put the bills in the drawer, I put the carry all in the truck.

I don't think I ever received a receipt. ;)

Both of us are happy.

I do some cash business myself, and the unwritten rule is to price your work/ goods in multiples of $20. Accomplishes two purposes: Gives the hint that you'd be amenable to a no receipt, cash deal, and also makes it easy to accomplish, as everyone has 20's on them.

Buy one, welding and fabricating would cost $50 an hour around here and I'll bet you have 3-4 hours into it.

I love my pallet forks.
My pole barn has a nice cement floor.
I bought a manual pallet jack at an auction and got er working.
I put EVERYTHING on pallets. Two table saws, scrap wood, scrap solid surface, a blower, a 6' horizontal belt sander. Bulk supplies.
Not only looks neater, but twice a summer I clean the ol barn out and its a breeze with the 3 pt. pallet forks.
I just run everything out the back of the barn in the yard. I ever run my saws and sander outside in the summer (keeps dust outside).
The floor pallet jack lets me pull an item out,use it and, put her back.
The 3 pt. lets me just pick it up and take is somewhere else.
Great for barn parties as well,
A nice pallet and a keg or two can easily be taken from the barn down to the bon-fire, slick as a whistle.
And the people at the party think you are just SOO organized.
Mark

I will ditto the stuff about the pallet forks. I bought a carryall and it pretty much sits. Found it easier to work off pallets, that way I can interchange jobs pretty easily. Switching from say wood hauling to any variety of tasks is easier by changing pallets rather than unloading and reloading the carryall. I can buy like say bags of concrete on sale, put it on a pallet, cover it then its ready to go when I need it.

Is the one ready made suitable for your needs if it is go for it. Having all the steel and other parts cutting and welding, then painting will cost unless you can find someone who works terrible cheap.

Thanks, Gene. That was kind of the way I was leaning. I have a brother-in-law who would weld it, but he's busy getting his greenhouses ready to start plants, and it would be at his convenience. Which is why I bought the TO30, so I can do stuff when I need it done.

Usually the capacity is rated near the base of the forks and is not a distributed weight along their length, I don't know about the KingCutter model. Manufacturers do this to boost the appartent weight rating of the implement.

I'm not sure what the price difference is, but if the pallet fork setup isn't too much more money that might be a better choice. They have a much heavier construction than the carry-all. If you own a drill you can add your own holes for mounting a platform. Good luck.

Or just make a platform out of a pallet (fill in the gaps in the pallet0, add sideboards all around, and you've got an "easy-on/ easy-off" carrier.
