This happened just outside of farmington IL. If you look there are a couple of times you can see the water tower in the background. This video turned up a couple of years ago when a friends father passes away. It was 8mm I had it converted to dvd last winter and since I have good friends one of them put music to it and got it on Utube and here it is. We have identified most of the men in the movie but not all. As you can see everyone in the neighborhood was there to help. It is so neat to see all the old tractors look so nice and see so many people I never meet untill they were much older, including my grandfather running his 730 gas. I hope you enjoy it as much as all of us have. bill Audio/Video clip:Untitled Audio Video

That was real good. Its a good thing somebody made a movie of it.I was only 7 in 1962 but I know what it was like when everybody plowed with tractors like that and the music was right there with it too.

Excellent video! I'm only 26 years old and it brought tears to my eyes... when I was younger and helping Dad on the farm in ND we had a couple of neighbors who would help out and we helped them in return. We put in some long, hard days but at the end of the day you had a "good tired" from a job well done.

I wasn't in on it, but a few years back a neighbor passed suddenly of colon cancer and his son was left to take over the farm after working away from it for several years. Neighbors got together and seeded a few thousand acres in a couple days. Made the local paper, but I'm sure that's about it.

Maybe if things like this would make the news instead of all the killing and stealing, people would start to do more of it... I wish things could go back that way, but everyone seems bent on looking out for #1 and no one else these days.

Thanks for all the nice comments. I had alot of help getting this done all I really did was post the link so you could watch it. Someone asked if this still happens and yes it does. The red flags predated the smv but were for the same purpose and as you can see many people used them. Seems like everytime I watch it I see something I never saw before. For me it is special not only because of my grandfather but I recognize so many of those guys and others I never did meet but now I can put a face with a name from the past. I'm glad you are enjoying it. bill

I"ve farmed on my own for 35 years, been involved in two of these. Those pictures are in my "keeper file". First time it was nine of us, pulling 37 bottoms. Plowed for a distant neighbor who owned an 80 across the road from us, plus his home place. His ankle broke, dropping a stalk hopper on it. Second one was a mile away- neighbor was in the VA hospital, and three of us baled 40 acres one afternoon, with about a dozen guys unloading thrower wagons. Besides it being fun, I didn"t think it was work- just had to switch wagons, and go again. In this German community- there was no shortage of beer, either! (What, somebody said this was work?) After starting farming from scratch, it was nice to have some dependable equipment to use to pay back some of those that helped us in the early years. Town people call it "Minnesota Nice" when you help someone. We just call it being neighborly.

Many of us remember those days when you helped your neighbor when a dark cloud passed over his head. It's very unfortunate we are where we are today and few signs of us returning to yesterday. We seldom get to see our kids have good deserved feelings as did those neighbors. I can't help but wonder if it isn't just my failing eye site, and need to fetch my glasses.

I don't want to take from the sunshine of all this, but as I recall it was a time to show the neighbors how much bigger or better your tractor was by stopping half way across the firld to let the tractor ahead of you get a little distance so you did not run them over. It was always in good fun, and you went home feeling good about yourself. DOING A GOOD DEED----PRICELESS.

Thank you for the good memories, a real treat.

Those were the days. Glad I got to be a part of them. Latest tractor I saw was the 4010 Diesel pulling a 4 bottom plow. Participated in a similar situation in 1975 when a neighbor died during harvest other and we cut all of of the rest of his beans with 13 combines then went back in July and cut his wheat.

That is fun to see. There were two or three of these situations when I was a kid. People helping people. Dad had a '59 MF 65 with a 4-14 mounted plow. One plow day was on a day I was not in school and Dad let me take the 460 Farmall with a pull type IH 3-16. Just like here, it would have been bad to have traffic control, everyone knew what to do.

One fall a farmer's loss of his arm let the neighbors get together for a milo combining event. Remember the noon lunch? Oh wow, people and food!

And, as I think about it the CO-OP and a couple other independent fuel suppliers filled everyone up. THANKS for the memories coming back!!!

I just remembered I wanted to add to my post that seeing these men and their tractors, how proud they were to help. This video shows some new tractors, 4020's, the 60series farmalls, and one ford I noticed, etc.

What is really historic with this is that these men were not that far from having used horses. I was born to late for that but Dad was a horse lover.

Also, if I may continue, I remember so well when Dad bought the 460 farmall and wheat (western kansas) was $3.10 a bushel. A year later it was around a dollar a bushel. Was a hard year or two.

I have to agree, that is one of the best posts I've seen in a long time. I don't think, I know I have tears in my eyes.
Also brings back memories of my dad. He's gone now, but he lost his left hand to a pto in the early 70's. Neighbors showed up to help as well. Not quite that many, but still was a wonderful sight.
Thank you,

Loren Flemming

Very nice. My grandfather and some neighbors did the same for a freind back in the day. He broke his legs and the all got together and put his crops in before they started on their own. I'll have to see if I can find the article and picture to scan. My grandfather, Goerge Pollard along with Leo Tracy, James McIver, Charlie McIver, Roy Jurek, and I cant remember who else right now , did a good thing. Makes you wonder if the same would happen today. I know I do whatever I can when ever I can, but then I've seen a farmer in a big 4x4 that will roll on by a smaller guy with a tractor stuck and not even pop in to pull em out. Thanks for sharing the video, wish I could save it some how.

Not on this scale, but yes, it does still happen. Neighbor lost his leg in an accident with his chopper. I was a teenager at hte time, and in school when people helped with his crops, but I helped out on weekends with cutting his winter's supply of firewood. Can remember a couple of otehr times with other neighbors when I was too young to help.

I have not seen anything like this scale but I have seen it on a smaller scale. The summer my grandfather found out he had cancer, me and my brother finished his tobacco patch for him and my grandmother. A guy we went to church with call me one night and just asked when we were going to start cutting. I said Saturday if the weather's good. Saturday morning we had the whole comunity in the drive way. Every one broght a wagon and went to work. By dark the whole patch was in the barn. We had some little kids drive'n about 8 trucks. They never turned them off. 3 or 4 people cutting, 5 or 6 spike'n, 3 loading, and a crew in the barn. Was a thing to see. I have been in on a few deals like this but it is realy something when a gang like that shows up at your house. Had a neighbor whose wife got down a few springs ago. One saturday the same crew, me included, showed up with tractors and setters and put his tobacco out for him. I wish we had a vidio of that.

I got something in my eye too. The neighborly gesture shown there is rare nowadays. That quality of film you speak of also reminded me of some 8mm my sister had put on video tape years ago. My Dad who passed away 20+ years ago is on some of it. We watched it one Thanksgiving and I have yet to see a room with 35 adults and children get still quiet quite like that. ll
