They don"t say if it"s gas or diesel, 4X4 or 2WD, 1500 or 2500 or 3500+, manual or auto trans. Geesh how can you report that and not give a little better description of the vehicle.

My brother's Ranger w/ 2.3L and 5-speed has over 250,000 and is still going strong- never adds oil between changes, head and oil pan have never been off, still original clutch... just stuff like brakes, drive shaft carrier bearing, couple of timing belts, etc.

That dont surprise me a bit. I had a 1990 Chevy 2500 with a 350 and a four speed. When I got rid of it it had 438,000 miles on it and the only thing ever done to it was maintenance.

I think it is probably a 350 gas, as it was a Silverado, and the Siverado package included the 350. Not close, but my wifes 94 Blazer had 245,000 miles when I sold it to a coworker. He has put 20K more on it, it still doesn't use oil.
When the Blazer had 170K, it had a problem with leaking inmanifold seal, an air leak, not coolant. Since the manifold had to be removed, I had the shop replace the water pump, serpentine belt, all the hoses, and the ground wire to the block. Just as a PM. Seemed to work, that was the only repair done.

I"ve had a lot of cars and trucks, all GM, a couple new ones, mostly low mile used plus a nice corvette and my favorite is a 1990 Gmc half ton with 259,000 on it. It"s the most trouble free thing I"ve ever had. My wife has been on me to retire it for a couple years but I just can"t turn my back on an old buddy like that. Jim

I got a 94' GMC 3/4 ton with a 6.5 turbo diesel it has 340,000 on it and all ive done is replace the rod, crank and cam berings at 300,000 mi. of course it has had a few injector pumps on it and numerious lift pumps. Im plannin on at least another 300,000 and maybe more. by the way the oil gets changed occasionally.

High hopes? we will see.

I drove a conversion van for a airport shuttle company ,they would get stock E-150's usually with 5.0's and run the life out of them 20,000+ mile oil changes only fix it if it broke .and they still got 5-700,000 miles before changing engines usually 2-3 trannys , and they still ran them 2-400,000 miles more before getting rid of them

While it may be true that any vehicle can go a million miles, That doesn't come without a GREAT deal of work. This means engine work, ball joints, tie rods, new seals, etc.

At the junkyard, an original owner of a 94 jeep cherokee came in rattling and barely running. The odometer said 277,500 miles, and he said he's took great care of the car with 3000 mile oil changes. It's quite obvious that it was taken care of, because the engine bay was kept clean and so was the interior. I know exactly what the problem was, as the oil pressure read zero and 3 or 4 psi at 3k rpm's. The autospy showed that there was a lack of compression.

My of my family's cars never made it over 200,000 miles. A friend's 1991 chevy pickup required an engine overhaul at 155,000.

I'm not saying that this story is a JOKE - rather, I AM saying that a vehicle with THAT many miles takes a considerable amount of work to keep it going - not just 4 radiators and 5 water pumps. We're talking everything.

I know of a guy that had a 1992 chevy with 280k miles on it with no overhaul and still looked good, no major rust. He ran heavy oil in it from what he says.

A 1997 E250 with 5.4 V8 gas. Neither the engine or the transmission has ever been overhauled. He got 500,000 miles out of the serpentine belt.

That's amazing considering all the head gasket issues the ealy 5.4s had.

"His maintenance secrets for getting a million miles from his van would make most automotive engineers and mechanics cringe: He changes his oil every 10,000 miles, but one time drove it 55,000 miles before an oil change. He adds a quart of oil with every other fill-up, however."

"Though automobiles with 1 million miles are rare, they're not unheard of. A 1966 Volvo owned by a New York man has more than 2 million miles on it, but that car doesn't regularly haul 3,000 pounds of auto parts halfway across the United States, as Mr. Schell's van does."

If he listed all the repairs it is not a diesel as there is no mention of injectors or injection pump. I know a man that had a semi with over a million miles and had not been overhauled, however his list of repairs included new valves new rings new bearings, rebuilt heads pistons sleeves, ect. Never been overhauled???? "Only put in what it needed"

Not the same but I had a NTC 350 Cummins small cam in 4300 IHC that went a little over 1,900,000 miles.Overhauled it half a dozen times, but it still had the original standard crank in it.Sold that truck years ago, might still be running.

It's not really uncommon to hear of that with OTR engines. I know of a couple Cat 3406B's that did close to 2 million miles with nothing more than a bit of head work. Rotating assembly was never touched in them, but one I know of finally had rod problems...
It's nothing to put 2-3 mil on some of those things if they get a couple of in-frame's.

A pickup is another story. This one seems to have spent a lot of time onthe highway that no doubt helped it immensley. There's nothing worse for any engine that stop and go driving and not getting warm. I'd almost bet that this particular one was a 350 gasser too... I don't know of too many of those diesels that didn't snap their cranks off let alone go that distance.

Some years ago a story ran about a Cummins Dodge that ran 1,000,000 miles with nothing done to the engine except a diesel pump overhaul, new injectors, a water pump and clutch kit and several sets of brakes. Never touched the bottom end or had the head off.
Was owned by an outfit that put on lots of highway miles delivering 5th wheel RV's.
Now that is impressive. The other guy sounds like the old lumber jack who claimed he used the same axe for 40 years, only had 8 new handles and 5 new heads in all that time. ;-)

I think that truck you are talking about is my dads. it is a 94 dodge 2500 cummins, over a million miles, never had the head off or the injectors changed. Changes the oil every 5 to 7000 miles. He still drives it to the VFW when he is not pulling trailers. He has all kind of stories about driving from California to Ohio with no clutch, or 3rd and 4th gear. Said he has only hit 8 or 9 deer in his driving career.

After he got a million on the truck, He went and bought a different one, and it only had 550000 miles on it before the transmission quit, so he was not real happy. A lot of it has to do with the driver. I never saw him gun the engine, and he is never agressive on the road. He tells everybody his blood pressure is lowest while driving the truck. This country could use a lot more drivers like him.

I have pictures of the odometer, and the truck but dont know how to post them.

I think I got gypted then. My 01 Dodge with a 24 valve Cummins just came home from the shop again. It was a real trooper up to about 155,000 miles. Then it had to have 'everything', lol. So far this winter a head (warped 2 places and cracked, 7 burned valves), 6 new injectors, new injection pump, front end (ball joints and grease seals), clutch, and a fuel tank unit. Almost 6 grand in it, oh well, maybe with all this it will last another 150,000.
