My neighbor has a 1992 Dodge 350 Diesel Dually. it has 100,000 original 1 owner miles. Auto trans no rust at all on the truck. I am thinking about buying it as a gooseneck puller. Are they a good truck to use. I have heard alot of stories about the trans that they put in those trucks. Should I be concerned about the trans. Also what would be a good amrket price to offer for the truck. Thanks in advance

the only years you have to worry about the transmission is from 2000 to 2002 i think those are the years but i do know 2001 is one of the years because my cousin had a tranny go out in a poorly cared for 2001 1 ton 4 wheel drive but you wont have to worry about that

If they changed the tranny fluid every 30,000 or less, used Mopar fluid and put it to the proper level then that tranny may have alot of life left in it. A big problem I have seen is alot of people aren't checking the fluid level in these Dodges correctly. Read your stick as alot of them are to be checked in NEUTRAL and not in PARK like 99% of everything else. This will make a BIG difference in the amount of fluid it has.

Can't beat the cummins for reliability, 100K isn't even broken in yet. Aftermarket mods to get a bit more umph are easy to find. Due to the exceptional quality of the engine a failure is highly unlikely unless you plan on adding several hundred hp. My fathers 97 goes like a bat outa hell and still gets about 20mpg empty and only loses about 1 mpg with as much green firewood as i can pile in.

"The 92 has the good inline pump and intercooler and I believe the 727 3spd auto that should be a good outfit.I have two dodge diesels a 90 and a 2000 both automatics so far they have been good trucks. The one you are looking at shoud be worth 3500 to 4500"

The inline pump came in 1994. I have a 94 in my yard with 470K original and running great until the guy hit the back of a Ferd pickup. Totaled, but the motor still runs!

The 92 is a great truck, check Epay to see how much they sell for, but don't tell the seller!

If its a good truck, buy it. If you need to rebuild the tranny, take it to a diesel performance shop and do it right, once. You didnt give the price he is asking but I will say this, the old mechanical engines are still in demand so dont be afriad.

I recently sold a 95 2500 2wd with cummins and automatic to my brother. It had 238k on it. I had to have tranny rebuilt at 150k. Bought it used with 33,500 miles on it and pulled a gooseneck with it all the time. I never pulled heavy loads in OD. Only ran in OD when empty. Got great mpg - usually 20 around trip. It was a very good truck. While I can't really complain about the tranny - I wished many times for an allison with that engine.

I have a '95 2500 club cab with an automatic tranny. I just had to replace all the cooling lines because of leaks, but other than that, it's pulled fine.

I have to agree that the Cummins is an excellent engine. If you are going to pull anything heavy I would stay away from the automatics or buy a newer one with the better trans. I have several friends that bought Dodges and Fords with autos to pull goosenecks with. It took 3 to 5 transmissions to get to 100,000. Heat is definitely what kills them. Never pull in OD, but even if you don't, you can still easily overheat them with a big load.

I work on Dodges, the automatic transmissions were a weak spot but, when pulling or in hills, lock it out of overdrive. Most of the trouble seen has been overheating due to pulling in OD. We just had an 05, 3500 come in with over 500K miles on it. Over-the-Road type driving, still a truck I'd trust on a cross country drive.

I can't comment on the auto-trans. I've got a 92 Dodge ex-cab, 4WD, W250 with the Cummins intercooled turbo 5.9., 3.5 axles, and a Gertrag 5 speed manual trans. It will outpull any of my 6.2 GMs or my Ford 6.9 or 7.3 turbo. And, my Ford F250 with the turbo 7.3 has 4.10 axles. Pulling a trailer up long hills, the 5.9 Cummins outpulls it with 3.5 axles - which is pretty amazing. It also beats them all with fuel mileage - empty or towing.
I paid $3300 for it with 120K miles and mild rust (from the state of Maine).

Same truck if rust-free would easily bring $5000 - $6000 here in New York. Just the engines bring well over $2000 if in good running condition.
Even the four-cylinder 4BT Cummins are bringing over $2000. I tried to buy one yesterday - 140K miles and the guy won't take less then $2500.

It always gets 20 MPG on highway trips doing 65-75 MPH. I also just took a 2000 mile trip with a 2000 lb. camper on the back, three people, one dog, logs of exra gear and got 17.5 MPG.

They are an excellent truck. I had the same thing with the 5-speed, it just sold on an auction for 3K, I thought it was a little cheap, but I don't know what all happened to it in the last 100K miles since I drove it. I don't like the automatics, the guys that use them claim they are fine as long as you don't overheat them. I bought a new one in '98 and it has been a very good machine, no troubles but only 100K miles on it, but I often miss the '92

If you go to the picture, the header and the caption both say it is a 2005 2500. That's what prompted my question. Not that it makes any difference. A million miles is a million miles, and nothing to be sneezed at.

Talked to a young fella up by the North Dakota line last month who had 388K miles on his and said that the engine had never been touched other than just routine maintenance items.

Think he told me that he was on his third tranny tho.

My dad would always say to people with "high mileage vehicles", "That's a long ways from a million." I think the cummins is probably one of americas greatest acheivements as far as mechanical accomplishments. They build reliable engines, without compromise.

The great part is the truck still looks good with very little rust. I will see if I can get a picture of it.
