What is baling wire costing everyone around the country? What do you figure it costs per bale?
Also what are your custom small square baling rates and what does it cost you to do it?
I think it is interesting the different rates and the way people figure their own labor value. What do you think your time is worth, please be realistic. Also if you put the small squares in the building how do you charge, break it down by different jobs.

Keith, check in the "Implement Alley" section. There is a similar segment that probably gives a little more detail. I charge .90 per bale to do small squares with an accumulator. The customer pick up and hauls. If they want me to load their wagons, I get 1.25 per bale. The last two years I charged .75 per bale. I get several jobs each year simply because I have the accumulator. It sure helps them in picking up the bales.

Last year I charged $1.50 to cut, rake and sq. bale left on ground. Wire was $56.00/box. I want to go up because of the price of fuel, wire nd equipment but other custom balers in my area have to go up also for me to stay competive. I charged $17 for 4X5+ rds. Jim

Boy you guys are cheap, I charge $110 a ton 50 lb bales, wire and string. Wire cost slightly more but in the long run its cheaper do to never having to re-bale any. Not sure but I think we paid $140 for the two boxes of wire and it sure goes a long way. But darn heavy when you have to add a new roll. Personally I like the string balers but my buddy likes his wire baler.
We have two IHC 46 balers (wire and string) and New Holland string baler I like it the best but it keeps braking down on me.

I'm halfway between Dallas and Okla.

Prices about the same here. I have significantly reduced my custom work for two reasons: Antiquated equipment keeps breaking down and hard to get folks to pay you. Seems the ones that are slow/no pay are the ones that only have animals to satisfy property ag and they aren't interested in spending any money on taxes or animals.

Also, they have absolutely no idea of what it costs to put that bale in their barn. I showed one lady my books and she just couldn't believe what it cost. I was leasing from her and we were on shares. Well when things went thru the roof, I explained to her just how much her "rent" went up and told her that this honeymoon was over.

On breakdowns, last year probably was my worst year ever. Hope IRS is understanding. Grin. We'll soon find out.

Mark

You guys get $17 to $25 a bale just to bale or does that include cut, rake , bale? Guys around here charge $8 to $10 to make 5X6 rounds with net wrap no raking cutting included.

I'm not sure I could even find any? Only seen maybe 1 or 2 wire balers in my life.

Not at all popular up here in the north.

I probably know of 20 wire balers in my area. Probably over half of the new balers ordered locally are wire.

Same here- I remember Dad buying some wire-tied bales in the late 50s- don"t know where it came from, but a real switch from what we baled ourselves with the AC Roto-Baler. Sure had plenty of wire to keep the other farm machines running!!!!! Moved here in"72- Next door neighbor"s auction had a wire-tie MM baler that hadn"t left the shed for decades.
