Hello, I am looking at a 340 IH to purchase. Can you tell me the good and the bad? Will it handle a 5 foot tiller? It has a T.A. which is functional. They are asking $2,500.00, sheet metal is all there and it comes with a flail mower. Thanks, Tim

Hi Tim,

I have a 340-U with a original Pippin loader/hoe. It's ok for that purpous and would probably make a average 35hp tractor for field work.

It's just like other 50yo iron, they run until something breaks. Mine poped a input shaft or exploded a clutch disc. Since it has a FULL frame loader/hoe that will take some time to repair, it's on the back burner for now as there's more pressing repairs ahead of it.

Am I disappointed it broke down? Heavens no! I've gotten 10 good years from it so far.

Good little tractors. Pay close attention to the steering, thats the weak spot on the IH340U. Expensive to repair and parts are hard to come by. I am not sure if the Farmall 340 has the same problem.

There a good little tractor at around 35HP. If the tires are good and every thing works as it should thats a good ball park price. If it has the 36 inch rears on it they can be hard to come by if or when you need tires for it
