Talking over the fence awhile back with 2 of my neighbors, one was teasing the other,he said, your 60 yrs old, retired, got a place in Arizona, you must have really had your nose to the grindstone, my other neighbor says,I worked alright but one thing I never did was buy a brand new pickup. Thinking there might be some wisdom in that. Dan-Alberta

Here in Ia you must buy a 3/4 ton pickup to legally deduct it for farm use. Is it that way in other states?

I just got a used truck yesterday. A 1928 Chevy 1 ton with 30,000 miles on it. Now I have to figure out how to get it here since it is 1100 miles away. Can"t wait to get it running!! Barn kept and real nice original shape. Still has original paint!

Not a pickup, but interesting story. Wife and I bought a used (2003, 9000 miles) Chevy Venture van in 2003. Paid $18,000 for it. Same model on lot was listed at $27,000-probably could have bought it for considerably less than that. If my math is correct, those first 9000 miles cost the previous owner $1.00 per mile in depreciation alone! Greg

My first new truck was in 93 bought a chevy with a v6 kept it a year and traded it for a 94 3/4 ton GMC with a 6.5 turbo. it has 340,000 and am planning on at least 600,000. I did rebuild the tranny and replaced all the berings in the engine at 300,000 not bad for the way i run one, and i did the engine work myself. It still had the cross hatch marks in the cylinders from the factory when i tore it down for the bering job.

I have a 80 one ton and have no idea how many miles it has on it. It was purchased new by an oil company and i got it third hand. As far as i know it still has the original engine and tranny and is still ticking.

I will and do run the wheels off them.

Randy

Last new truck I bought was 1978. Financial advisor told me to buy the best 3 year old truck you can and drive it until the wheels fall off.
I've saved some big bucks by doing this

My 88 Silverado engine went out at 250K. Bought neighbors 90 F150 with 70K. What a money pit and cab and controls right out of the 1930's and Ford brags how many trucks they sold for 31 years! I and daughter put 2 engines and three transmissions in a 90 Dakota 4cyl stick shift and got rid of it at a little over 100K. Not careless or rough, short oil change schedules, keep wheels aligned, etc. No Fords or Dodges in my future. Leonard

Did you read where that guy in Wisconsin got a million miles on his 1991 chevy full size. It doesnt say how many water pumps, engine parts and transmissions he went through though. I wonder if GM will give him a free truck, If they can advertize the 1 million mile truck on TV. (The slogan stands true for some, The longest trucks on the road)

Wi million mile? Read local story- near as I can remember: 5 water pumps, 2 or 3 trannies, engine block is original but might have had some crank bearings/oilpump replaced. Was bought used with 45,000? Does a lot of highway driving delivering seafood? Oil changes on frequent schedule 3000 miles? The big factor would be the highway mileage- that is about the easiest on engine. RN

Right on! Who knows how many things he's replaced, but it looks like Shell Oil wants to buy that truck.
Maybe I should tell them my 94 Suburban with 235k on it is for sale--think they'd be interested?

Have you checked the price of used late model trucks on dealers lots? I've bought new trucks for less than some of those 1 or 2 year old trucks on the lot.The guys selling them privately usually owe more than they paid because of finance charges and others fees they paid.

I usually buy mine a few years old, buy extended warrany and then pretty much use them till the wheels fall off. I can't remember selling one as they are ready for the scrap heap when I'm done with them. But I won't buy a new one. You lose 10 thou in depreciation in the first few years.

You don't loose anything if you right it off your taxes. It's actually a better deal than used.
The loss comes in when you wear them out,it's better to trade while they still have a value.

Hubby and I took over the family farm a couple of years ago and are constantly learning. How do you right a new p/u off your taxes? Please reply to my email, luke1019@mail.com. Thanks.

You don't write it off. You can depreciate it and it will reduce your taxes some. But you will spend a thousand dollars to save 10. The math just doesn't work unless you are in a really high tax bracket.
