AIing a hog is pretty simple. I personally haven't AIed, haven't had the hogs since the bottom fell out of the market in the late 90's, but my dad has done plenty of AI. Basically, all it is is putting semen in with a straw. Most people use the AM PM rule. Heres an example. If the hog comes into heat in the morning, you wait until that night to give her the first dose of semen, then, when you wake up the next morning, give her the second dose. As far as actually dosing her, you will need a breeding catheter(sp?)(We always used Golden Pig, but any one is fine), a nonspermicidal lubricant to lubricate the catheter, and your choice of semen. While she is in standing heat (haunch pressure makes her hunch up) insert the lubricated catheter until it reaches the cervix and slowly rotate to build excitement. Then, take the bottle or bag of semen, open it, and place it on the end of the catheter and let it slowly drain into the gilt. Then, after you are done, remove the catheter and throw it away. Use catheters one time only. They're about twenty cents apeice. Depending on your desired use (Show, sell, or put in freezer), semen can be as cheap or as expensive as you want. Southern Advantage out of Pehlam sells plenty of show hog semen for $$$. However, as hog semen is perishable (it can't be frozen) if you call them you might be able to get your semen cheaper if the need to get rid of some. They also sell a few supplies if you ask. Just remember to make sure you buy two doses and keep them cool until you use them. Like I said, we've been out for several years, and I'm not claiming I know everything. However, thats how we have done it. If anyone else on this forum has anything to add, improved methods, different instructions, whatever, please chime in on this. Good day.
