My experiance with TSC is that they've got the
HIGHEST PRICES anywhere, much higher than NAPA,
where the products are good, but they sure are
proud if it.
I can't afford to shop at TSC!

As mentioned earlier so much is dependent on the local store manager.
As a farmer and retail manager of 30+ years,at least in Iowa the stores are decently maintained and stocked.
The comapany is public and is accountable to shareholders who expect a profit/divedend on their investment.Therefore each squarefoot of that store is responsible for "turning inventory"
Unfortunatly for us old tractor owners they cant afford to dedicate 72 lineal feet to decals,starters and manifold that we might need.
Simple economics-after all how often do we buy a bunch of parts ahead of time in anticipation of a tractor purchase we havent made yet hoping we wull need them.

As others said, store management plays a big part. As Traditional Farmer states, TSC, like any other store in business today, will stock what sells. They have computerized inventory management systems If they have a part that sat on the shelf for 5 years, they will be reluctant to put another one there, to sit for another 5 years.
As for hiring young girls who know nothing about the farm business, think about that remark. When they have an opening, they hire from the pool of applicants who apply. People who have the knowledge about farming that posters would like to see in the stores aren't lining up for jobs at TSC. My experience with TSC is that some of the workers are knowledgable, but I don't hold it against the kid (working on weekends to make a few bucks) when he doesn't know an answer to a question. Willingness to find out or help me look (i.e. customer service attitude) goes a long way in my book. Plus, he's learning each day and at least is not sitting home playing video games.

Really its unreasonable to expect a company to be able to stay in business carrying parts for tractors that haven't been made for 40 years and a bunch of tightwads usually own them at that.TSC is pretty good for 3 pt hitch items,cattle blocks,hydraulic hoses,chain and the like.Better than nothing.

Ah TSC. We've had one in town for many years, and they just moved to a new shop on the other side of the street.

I remember when they were a tractor supply company. Boy, the parts and equipment you could get there was great.

Today...Well, you can order things. There is a small rack in the back where they keep a few tractor items. A cheezy starter soleniod, an 8N muffler, maybe a seat cushion.

Now if you want a horse bridle or ladies gardening gloves, they've got em! In about 80 different colors, with or without cute plastic flowers on them. And probably the nations largest selection of John Deere memorabilia. That takes up a full quarter of the store.

Anymore, other than than being able to buy cheap bolts in bulk (if they have them in the bins), I just don't find anything there to buy.

TSC is very much a creature dependant upon it
s store manager. If you have one that is good, and whom knows his job and his products AND his clientel, you will get good results. My local one is usually well stocked with few bare spots anywhere. You CAN once in a while show up for some feed, five minutes after someomne else did and find them "cleaned out". They do not tend to sell often to buyers who get it by the ton. The nuts and bolts are always stocked, and you can rely on getting a battery.

Their magazine rack is stocked. So are the Carrhart and FX Schmidt racks. During Christmas, they have a stocked toy section.

The fencing supplies are there too---and at best prices you will find usually.

It really does depend a lot on what you are looking for.

On the other hand, if the manager is incompetant and has untrained, disinterested help, I fail to see how one could stay open.

Bob, where at in Carrolton? I live south of Canton and the inlaws live down by Wintersville so I go through Carrolton alot. The 2 we have in Canton aren't much good. Mike

In my opinion one of the worst run companies in the USA. They seem to hire young girls who like horse and know little and young men who I guess like young girls and know even less. Useless. The comments about empty shelves reflect every store in this area, Richmond/Southern Maryland.

like was mentioned before, if they have a good manager the TSC stores are like night and day from each other. I have noticed that any of them by me are a joke. They never re-stock items they are supposed to have and nobody there knows anything about farming anymore. My girl friend tells me to stop going in there because I get all worked up about all the time I wasted going there thinking they would have obviously common items they should be stocking. The last time I tried to get heat tape a couple of weeks ago and the manager told me that it is a seasonal item - after I had passed a Walmart and Home Depot. And nobody there at TSC knew what heat tape was.

Here in upstate New York, we don't have Rural King, so TSC is all we have. Where we live we have 3 within a 1/2 hour drive. They are very variable, if they have a good manager, they can be a good store. The one near us with a good manager keeps in stock things that you request him to. I've told him all of the livestock items that I need regularly, and he keeps them in stock. If they don't have something that I need, he orders it, and calls me when it comes in. The other 2 TSC's near us are terrible. In fact their managers argue with me about what I need, and they have no clue. Needless to say, I don't go to them anymore. but for the most part, regarding livestock supplies, they're the cheapest anywhere, and they're also the cheapest on fencing supplies.

Rural King came to Angola Indiana a coupla years back and for the life of me I can figure out how TSC keeps there doors open. I have not found a thing that Rural King is not cheaper on for the same exact item. On top of that Rural King has Free Pop Corn. First thing I hit after walking thru the door. Free coffee also but have not figured out how to eat a bag of pop corn and carry a cup of coffee at the same time while pushing a cart.

You and davediehl must live pretty close to me. I do go to both TSC and Rural King in Angola, sometimes I actually find what I want. Most of the time my grandkids get the benefit of whatever my wife buys. Tried to buy moldboards for my JD plow in both stores last spring, nobody knew what a moldboard was, maybe didn't know what a plow was either. I live southeast of Coldwater, M I.

Rural King and TSC in Angola are quite different. TSC will take the time to order about anything you need for plow points, disk blades, ect. Rural King has never been able to do that. It seems that TSC has a huge selection that they just don't have room for. Bought a 7 foot catagory 2 rear blade 2 years ago for 279 bucks. Rural King couldn't even come close. Rural King seems to order a one time shot of many different items where TSC restocks. Just had better luck at TSC and willing to pay a little more for the service and selection.

I go to the Rural King in Mt. Carmel Ill. whenever I go to see my mom. I really like that store. You need to get you one of those cup holder like you stick in your car window for your coffee and put it on your cart. ;^)

Used to spend a lot of time in Carrollton, plus our family preacher lives there. I like the nut/bolt selection and the prices at TSC are decent on them.

Yeah they are good on clothes and horse stuff and cheap bolts.
But if you do not have a farm type of store around they are better than nothing.

Every time I go there it makes me miss Quality Farm & Fleet that much more. It amazes me how they can let thier shelves sit bare for 2 months before restocking simple things like hitch pins or zerk fittings. How sad.
