Really had my eyes opened up to-day !! Gettin' older and have had some health issues latley, so am condidering trading my 1998 Bonneville on another vehicle which would be easier to enter and exit. My Bonneville has 177000 Klms(110000mi)and is in excellent condition. Dealer offered a grand total of $700 on a trade for an extended cab 2001 Ford F150. Claims that Bonneville values have dropped that bad. Guess I'll either drive her a lot longer myself or give her to the kids. Just much too good a vehicle to give to a dealer. Thanks for letting me vent !!!!!

Dealer(thief) makes money on new cars, dealer makes money on used cars, dealer makes money on money(loans), dealer makes money on repairs. If you have to deal with them, only allow 2 lies, when the tell you number 3. GOOD bYE if you are not a dummy like they think you are.

As ever, thanks so much for all your replies fellas!! This has certainly been an educational experience for me. I have purchased Ford tractors, equipment and my first truck ('55 Cevy)from the present owner's grandfather and father. I know much has changed in the business world over the years, but I can't help to think the grandfather would turn over in his grave if he had to busines this way today. He was raised during the depression and did most of his business on a hand shake as did his brother who built up a very successful feed, farm supply and farm equipment dealership. Not particularily dumping on the grandson, but I guess I've been stuck in the past for too long. Jim

Had an uncle that bought new every few years. Never traded. Said they wouldn't give him anything. He always offered the old one to somebody in the extended family.

A good way to check a trade deal is go to KBB .com.Check the trade-in value which is wholesale. When you do condition remember that no dealer is going to give more or little more than they could buy one at auction for .When doing your condition evaluation there is no such thing as an excellant used car unless in was hauled new to your garage and put up on blocks.Get the lowest cash outright price deduct wholesale and that is usually pretty close to what you can trade for.

dealer = theif at least in most cases, your far better off selling your car to somebody else that will enjoy it as much as you did, for more money that trading in, but for grins i did "get" a dealer once i was buying a new '94 ford f150 4x4, and trading in 2 a 85 nissan with 170 grand on the clock and a '78 ford f350 flatbed whose spedo hadnt worked in 6 years, now the funny is the flatbed, it wasn't present at the dealer that day it was still out at the place, but a hot shot salesman butted in and he "had seen the truck and it was a good one and 4x4 too" well it may have been "a good one" but it wasn't a 4x4 i had white spoke rims on it, and i had got a deal on 4 take off all terrain tires off a dually so this truck had all terrains on all 4 corners [ it was a single rear wheel] we made the deal signed the papers and they offered to have the lot boy come out and drive the ford in , we'll i heard the manager almost s--- when he saw that truck was a 2 by and found out what they had in it for money, i've been affraid to go back to them since then

Let me tell you about our Bonney: It is a '95 with 179,000 on her. The gas mileage is as good as any smaller . less safer and alot more uncomfortable model(s). It truly gets 28 MPG on the highway and at least 18 in and around town. The car rides and drives like a dream and is a pleasure to operate as well. Has plenty of power for a V-6 /3.8 engine and always starts and has had very little problems over the 3 1/2 years we have owned it. That's the long of it -- the short of it is that I certainly won't let a dealer have it for near nothing so he can turn around and really profit from another sale of it and tell some poor soul that is is worth alot more than they are letting it go for at that. We plan on driving this girl for quite a while still , instead of buying/trading for something that is really worth less and payments too boot. " A bird in the hand" Drive your Bonney and enjoy the benefits of a nice car !

trade-in prices are just a joke- that's why i have so much rolling stock around here! Every time a dealer insults my intelligence at trade-in time, I hang on to the car/ truck/ motor home that I was looking to get out of. Oh well- i have plenty of spares!
I know what you mean, though, about getting in and out of cars as you get more "mature" - I went from a Honda Civic (bought new in 96, now w/ 340,000 miles on it, never had the head off or clutch changed) and literally stepped UP to a Chevy 2500 HD- and love it. Especially the heated seats- good for the back and the hemis!

We looked at trading a '92 Tempo (a great running car w/V6 and 30mpg) for a new Honda. They would only offer $50. We sold it to a guy who was down on his luck and needed a car to get to work for $100. It was a much better car than that price, but I did'nt mind letting it go that low to help a guy out.

One way to find out what your car is worth is to go to kbb.com and see what it is worth for real, not just a dealer opinion.

I just recently bought wife and I a 1992 Linc. Town car. Lots of room and runs out nice. Very clean with all option.
Our Ford Escort of 99 is starting to get hard to get out of with our leg problems. Might mess that gas mileage but not the discomfort of the Ford at times.
Only problem I am having with it right now is getting use to the car. It floats down the highway and the steering is real easy. Fells like we are flying in it. :)

110,000 that really ain't that much these days. ain't it funny how vehicles depreciate over just a few years? my mom got an '01 bonnie a few years back, got it fer a few thougsand i think ( like 6or 8). the sucker only had 90,000 on it. know what ya mean. trade in value these days has gone to the dogs!

Father-in-law wanted to trade in his 99 Ford Taurus on a Lincoln... they allowed him $500 and said "That"s an OLD car!" The Lincoln he was trading on was a 98 model year with low miles so he told them, "That Lincoln is an even OLDER car!" and left.

A week later he saw a similar Taurus on their lot for $4500!

I don"t mess with dealers anymore, they are most often a total rip-off. eBay has been OK for me with vehicles and I think I"ll go there again for the next one.

I have dealt with a lot of car dealers new and used(Service Manager in a tire and repair shop for 13yr.). Most up scale dealers in this area plan to make $5000.00 on late model low mileage cars and trucks. I know you all think I am nuts but when another dealer looks at a car and tells you what a dealer paid for it yesterday and you call him two days later and he wants $5000.00 more than he paid - $200.00 for white wall tires that is a lot of profit. We used to do about $5000.00 a month on dealer service(we were cheaper than the dealers own sevvice departments.

A few years back I had a friend with a 1997 Lincoln Town car that he only used to drive to the golf course and back, 3time a week. Had 60,000 on it and new Michelins. He died suddenly and I bought the car at a higher than normal price to help his widow. I now have 120000 on it and get about 24 MPG avg,and Itis the most comfortable car I have ever owned. The used car dealers were trying to buy the car at less than half of what I paid because"that an old gas guzzler and will be hard to sell" Henry
