Does anyone on this forum have an idea how to get the musty aluminum smell out of an old Pepsi machine..It works great but you can't stand the smell of the can when going for a slug of Miller Light...

I'd like to thank those of you that responded to my inquiry...Even the ex-alchoholics that are on the soapbox condeming my use of an old Pepsi machine for my own personal enjoyment...I'm not an "alchie" by any stretch of my twisted imagination...I have to pass random drug and alchohol testing for my full time employment and to keep my CDL license intact..I learned many good tips for eliminating aluminum odors being emitted from my relic pop machine...If the "crybabies" want to stop by some time , I'd like to discuss this in more detail with them..Maybe over a cold BEER. Or not...Roy

I've got a combination of Barley pops and regular pops..On the Miller Lights I put an empty can between full ones...Thata way a brewsky costs a buck....Regular pop costs 50 cents..It's not much of a retirement plan , but it's something...Gotta look out for number 1 and of course the Boss too....

Heck Yeah! A vintage soda machine dispensing barley pops! I want one! What a conversation piece for the workshop. Wait til the old man hears about this one.

It sounds like you have some good answers here, but the baking soda sounds like a winner to me.

Where do you find such a machine?

I thought alcoholics went to meetings...

When my bedroom airconditioner starts smelling bad, I spray the take the front off and spray the coil down with Lysol spray. Drench it pretty good, run it a hour or so, and smell usually goes away.

Doesn't a pop machine shake the livin' daylights out of a beer when it gets dispensed? My dad used to get all huffy if I shook up his beer too much on my way from the fridge back to him.

Why do you need to consume so much alcohol that you need a pop machine for it? Are you covering up deeper issues? Do you need alcohol to cover self esteem issues? Personal problems?

Before you go the trouble of turning this machine into a giant crutch for your mind, maybe you should get an evaluation and attend some alcohol awareness classes. It could save your life and mine.

For Petes sake leave the guy alone. He has a problem with smell of his cooler and not an addiction. If he would stock it with Sam Adams Lite the smell would probably go away, then again maybe it will increase, who knows? Any way lighten up,sir,You have a nice day.

Sam Adams Lite? Doesn't that come off the old Hudy DeLite line in the old Hudepohl plant just west of downtown Cincinnati? My brothers in law used to drink that when they were young. Of course, they were from Delhi, what would you expect?

You are what we call an enabler. You see someone with an alcohol problem but you don't try to help him. Instead you encourage him.

Do you also have unresolved problems with alcohol abuse?

I'm trying to be helpful. But sometimes we need to admit we have a problem.

Seek help,Newman,What J.C.J,and countless other guest handles, this is for you.

You are what we call a troll on this site. You pop in from time to time as a GUEST,never use a real handle, tries to stir up trouble.Your replies usually end up getting the whole topic deleted 'cause you personally attack regular users or abuse the site with your political views which by the way is a big no no here. And the BEST thing is,you think you are so clever(LOL)! A TROLL YOU ARE!!

I've seen you put down some of the BEST guys on here and alot of them are long time users.Do you feel that badly of yourself or have such low self-esteem that you get a rise outa slamming others and putting others down like you do? Man,you need SERIOUS help!!

Is there a reason you won't sign up as a regular?I think you don't want to because when the heat gets turned up,or you're out-witted you simply disappear, then re-appear on another topic. The easy way out.Says alot about the kind of person you are.

Do you even have any interest in tractors or farming,I sure haven't seen any. This is ,you know a tractor related web site. All I see from you is smart a$$ remarks, low blows, and political blah blah blah. Are you a reject from the Atoz's OTEE forum?Couldn't take the heat over there?Personally,I don't think you could last a minute there.

BUDWEISERS,HERE I COME(and I really don't give a $hit what your opinion of that is).

Sooooo o, its wrong to put his beer in a "pop" machine, vs say, a refridgerator. Perhaps this machine is part of a colection of old pieces in his shop, or garage, and he keeps his beer in it for thr nostagic atmosphere he intened to create in his shop/garage. Maybe he doesnt but one or two a day, thus the smell gets "soaked" into the can somehow, is it wrong? I have an old fridge in my workshop, I have 3 or 4 beers in my fridge, now you tell me, am I an alcoholic????? ?? NO, that beer has been in there for well over a month, oopppss! I better get to drinking, oh wait, thatll make me an alcohlic, but wait, I dont like to drink but one or two, at the most, 1 - 2 months apart. Lighten up boss! If youre looking for a real head case, look in the mirror.

Check with a refrigeration place or you can get some concentrated cleaner and industrial deodorizer yourself from Grainger that is made for cleaning out the evaporator core and drip pan. Has acid in it so wear gloves and goggles and dilute it some. It's stronger than the stuff you get at auto supplies to spray in cowl on vehicles.

Re: O.T. Old Pepsi Machine Stinks - Here's your fix. in reply to Roy Suomi, 02-23-2008 04:25:28
I would definitely clean the drip pan if it has one, And then if it really is aluminum, Go to your local hardware store and get some cleaner for aluminum screens. It will have a somewhat watered down version of phosphoric acid that will really put a shine to old aluminum. I use it for cleaning dash switches in old cars during restoration.

Be SURE that you have a mask to breath through and also some kind of eye protection and do it in a well ventilated area. I use a small spray bottle to put it on, Then just leave it there for say a minute and wash it down. It will make old aluminum look like it's brand new. You can use it on the cooling coils also, just be careful to not get your motors wet.

Roy, You might try recleaning the old machine with a pressure washer, or a steam washer. You probably could rent one or find someone or company to do it.
Or better yet call the local Coke/Pepsi/Dr Pepper, etc, etc Distributor and visit with them on a cleaning solution , for your machine. Hope this helps!
Later,
John A.

it may have some mildew or mold in the aluminum where the corrosion is. i would first try and clean it up with hot water and bleach to kill any mold. put the mix in a pump sprayer to apply. i spray it on, close it up nd let it set for a day to be sure you got it all, then rinse it out, maybe try some aluminum mag wheel cleaner for auto's after its rinsed out. if that doesnt work, paint the inside to seal it.

There must be a drip pan/evaporator pan some where that isnt working. I dont know much about pop machines but ussually most cooler products have a drain for moisture that is routed to a spot to evaporate. That doesnt help much does it. Sorry

just a idea but the smell is probably due to some old drink product spilled long ago,you might get some of that clear or lime away used to clean bathroom fixtures, and see if that works, be sure to hit all the cracks and seams in the machine

NAH....It's " that smell " that the older air conditioned cars had years ago....I already washed it out with baking soda...But smell comes back....Me thinks it's corroding aluminum that is causing it to stink...It's probably 35 years old...I hate to junk it , but I might have to....
