Have installed the new insturment panel. Now installed a new temp sending unit. Run wire from sending unit to one side of gauge. Now the other wire for gauge? Does it just hook up to a hot wire some where?

Larry, I'll be mean before I get simple so as to complicate things some a few questions first. #1 does the gauge have + and - on it to mark the terminals??? #2 is your tractor + or - ground makes a difference. Now I'll guess its - ground and I'll guess the gauge is marked. So then you run a wire from the - post on the gauge to the sending unit, and then from the other side of the gauge you run a wire to the switch or coil etc. Almost any place that has power only when the switch is turned on. Questions well you have my number.

Old, we are working with 12v Stewart Warner resistance gauge movements & senders. They are not polarity sensitive, there is no positive or negative. Makes no difference if the tractor is wired pos or neg ground.

The gauge movement is grounded to the gauge board, the gaugeboard to the sheet metal completing the power coil circuit to the tractor frame. That provides a constant magnetic flux at the power coil pole.

The sender coil is grounded at the threads on the temp sender and the flange screws on the gas sender completing the sender coil circuit. The senders are varible resistors so the current in the sender coil and thus the magnetic field strength at the sender coil pole varies to move the pointer pole one way or the other.

All you need to do is have a switched 12v power source to the power terminal (right) and the sender connected to the sender terminal (left). Make sure the gaugeboard, gas sender flange, and temp sender threads are well grounded to the tractor frame.

Looking at the back of the gauge board, gauge sender terminal is on the left side, power terminal on the right.

Power needs to have a switched source, I.E. key on, power to gauges. If you have the original three terminal key switch, source will be the ignition terminal, If I remember right it is labeled "I". If not original switch, connect to any terminal that is switched like accessory terminal or power terminal to the coil.

Depends on what you're working on. On a mid-'60's International pickup I went direct to 12V source and promptly let the smoke out of my temp gauge. I didn't realize that IH used a constant voltage regulator [CVR] before the gauge.

Then again, some gauges DO take 12V feed. Depends on the application. And if you're on a 6V system, you prolly can go direct to a [switched] power source.
