Was trying to pull a widowmaker limb from a tree that was in the neighbors front lawn. The limb was the size of a small tree. In the snow directly underneath it was the NG regulator. When I pulled the limb loose I was on the road with both wheels spinning and the front hopping up and down. (yes I was hooked to the drawbar). When it hit the ground one God awful hissing sound started. Thought it was a tire but it was gas. That thing leaked and whistled awful loud. The fire department come in with a squad of fire engines. They get out and comeover to the pipe and just stare at it. Thank God their was a shutoff below the regulator. It was about 6 inches under the frozen ground

When I was still working on the farm my boss had a field leveled so we could ditch irrigate it. They didn"t rebury the natural gas line so it was about 6 inches deep at the one end. They didn"t tell me this and so when I was finishing the last furrow I hooked on to it ( 2 inch line). I didn"t realize it until I got out and opened the gate. It was whistling so loud it was deafening. It took the gas company 4 hours to fix it and there were a lot of unhappy neighbors. Turns out the gas company turned the line over to my boss since he didn"t want anyone hooking on to it. It cost them $600 to fix it, that fall I was burying it 2 feet deep.

Last year think it was at US12 and Tharp Lake Rd in Union, MI. some guys were digging for I think was a barn foundation and found like a 12" or maybe 18" main the hard way. That was one big, deadly crater. I wasn't home at the time, but shook everything for miles when it went off. Was unfortunate. That pipeline company put a trailer and guard out there for months to make sure no one touched evidence. That was a mighty big, deep hole. One could've parked multiple semis in that thing. Was a young guy operating from locally had a young mother to be wife. Sad.

Glad you're ok. Things can and do happen.

A number of years ago ,in the middle of the night ,heard aloud sound like ajet plane flying low.Went to check and found a large meter broken off of a high pressure gas line. After repairs,Ichecked around in the field and found lots of empty bottles and tracks where a drunk had run over the meter and backed off and drove away.If he had been sober it probely would have killed him

Well, one thing you can take a little comfort in, the high pressure gas is much harder to ignite than low pressure like what's in your house.

I was just a little kid riding with Dad on the 4020 when he hooked a gas meter in the weeds with a plow on the three point.

He just got off the tractor - went over and picked up a corn cob and stuck it in the pipe that was broken off.

Then we headed to the house to call the gas company.

That was probably fairly dangerous, but it doesn't take much to avert a catastrophe, sometimes...

Don't feel too bad, had to jump into a trench once with a bunch of other guys and hold up a 6" main feeding a 23 story building, the timbermen from the dockbuilders local were on the site doing all the trench shoring, the bank started to give way before they could finish shoring, was only a 6 foot deep trench, we held it while some others got some supports in place, don't want to think what could have happened or there was not enough hands to hold it, ductile or cast iron would have snapped, was some kind of metal pipe, probably from the 60's.

Demo contractor that razed the old buildings when the lumber yard office and hardware store burnt to the ground, pulled up 2 1" old lead laterals from the street, they were just blowing in the breeze for days, young and stupid, I went right over to them and put my hand right over the line, yep it's gas, they never shut it off first. Lot of volume came out of those lines, always wondered what if a passerby had tossed a cigarette in there, would have been on giant bunson burner. Thinking about it now, just one spark from the undercarriage of a crawler or static etc.,, I know the contractor too, looked like he got the machine out of there and did not come back until it was shut off, at least 2 days later, it was going all night til the next day.

One thing you don't want to mess with, have seen photos of charred machinery when people were not so lucky.

Wait until the gas company computes the gas loss and sends the bill - and they will.

Many years ago, we had gone to visit my folks. Stayed until after dark, then went out to the car, and way off in the distance was the biggest flames we ever saw. So, curiosity got the better of our good judgement, and we went to see whats up! Drove 15 miles, finally got there, along with 300 other cars and people! Found a main cross-country gas line had exploded! After sitting out there, stuck in a giant traffic mess, my car began to heat up! Couldn't afford permanent anti-freeze, so i used alcohol, which was way cheaper, and would heat up and boil out way quicker! Finbally got out of there, and about half-way home, both bottom radiator hoses blew off, (1940 Ford V8)leaving us stranded! This was around 3am! Luckily, our garbage man came by and we got a ride home in that stinky old truck! After that, i joined the local Fire Dep't, so i could get in to the scene without taking my car or truck!
