Where are you guys coming up with that the 60 uses a lot of gas? That is the most economical tractor on gas I have ever seen, way more economical on gas than the M. I also think the 60 is easier to work on, other than that I don't which one would out work the other.

Just make sure that 60 has the optional power steering and live pto ! I'd move on up to the next model a 620 then you can also have a "normal" 3pt. hitch.

Good question. Both good tractors. I favor the John Deere. Better range of ground travel speeds through the gears.

Like others have said get a diesel. Both these tractors will burn lots of gasoline.A WD Allis will burn less gas has good hydraulics if you want a gasser and they are cheap to buy.

We ran a G and a 720 for years on the farm.
We baled with the 720 and never lost a u joint on the pto driveline..but we had a New Holland baler.

We had a Case 800 which was a nice machine but overall the 720 was the work horse of the farm.
I'd take the 2 banger for real work or show any day.

We had a 70 and a G, but still have the M. Most M's in this area have had live hydraulics put on them and as someone else said you can put M&W hand clutch on for live power, but I baled quite a bit one year with the M w/o live power and got along ok. As others said the 2 lungers will beat the knuckles out of the pto if you use it very much. A diesel would be better if you are going to run it very much. Lee

Get a diesel. Unless you are getting either for less than a grand....

With baling Live PTO is very nessacary.

We love our M because it is an old war horse that we can leave on a little Minnesota Spreader, but Yep it can really use the gas.

Both are going to use a LOT of gasoline. You might be mohey ahead to buy a later model tractor that is a diesel. the diesel may cost more but you may make money on less fuel use. Dad had a JD 630, follow on to the 60, which liked gasoline.

From 1959 until about 1970 we ran a 60 and a 730 gas on a JD 14T and 24T baler, and we were replacing the front pto joint every year. When we finally put the 4020 on the baler we never replaced another u joint. Some of the guys said the u joints went out because the PTO shaft is a little offset on the 2 CYL tractors but I don't think so. Jim

Traction and torque The 60 would be alot better than an M. It could have live power as it was an option. I do have both they are both in very good shape but the 60 will out work an M .For yard work loader work The M might be a little handier If only it had live hydralics.

For the plow the M is far better and you will also like the smoth power of the M on the baler ive ran both the two cycls arent good for a pto baler unless you like a lot uf jerking.

The 60 would have live pto and hydraulics. You can stop ground speed and still have pto running. The M doesn't have live pto, when you step on the clutch, the pto stops. May or may not have live hyd, maybe a few more horses. Chris

For baling, the JD 60 with live PTO would work well. I do not know if the M was available with live PTO.

Parts are generally more expensive for the JD...the M would be my choice if it's a real working tractor. Just for collection I'd want the JD.

Two considerations, JD has hand clutch, but six speeds. M has foot clutch, but only five speeds. If you can live with the hand clutch, I'd opt for the JD.
