Wouldn't ask here but you guys and gals are such a smart group I could get some answers here. Price of oil going up so high, for heating oil 2 weeks ago I paid 97 cents a liter, thats about $3.88 a US gallon, Yes Canadian here. I have to use oil to heat where I live, no natural gas lines near me, propane just about as expensive. Last year oil 73 cents a liter, about $2.92 a US Gallon, cost me about $3000.00 to heat this big old house last year. I have been checking into Wood Pellet Stoves, a friend of mine got one 2 years ago and their oil bills use to run about the same as mine. Now for the last 2 years they have used about $1100.00 in wood pellets and just a bit of oil. Savings about $1,500.00 a year. Guess my questions are, any of you use Wood Pellet stoves? What brand is the best? Have been told Hammond brand is the best. A 55,000 btu stove will heat a 1800sq ft home? I can run a couple of ducts from my cold air return to 10 feet infront of the stove, leave the furnace fan running and it will circulate the heat through the house? Anything else I need to know? Sorry for the long post but I need to do use something besides oil heat would like to know your thoughts before I spend $5,000.00 on a stove and install.

Our main heat is a Quadra Fire Santa Fe, we just heat 1200 sq ft on the main floor. They do have a larger model that is supposed to burn just about anything that you can put in it. I believe it is rated at 60K BTU's. A bunch of us got together and bought a semi load of pellets from a manufacturer, price was $150. Next year it looks like we'll have to get 3 loads since so many people want them.

Harman model 45 just uses a through the wall flue, no traditional chimney. Burns grain or wood pellets. It will also burn coal but they can't tell you that due to EPA regulations.
Are you near Blyth, Hamilton or Sue Ste Marie Ontario?
#6 fuel oil is cheap. Burns fine as long as it's pre-heated between the oil pump and the burner. Same rules as burning bio diesel or waste vegetable oil.

been using a Harmon PC-45 for 2yrs now. really like it, pretty trouble free. It'll heat our 3000sq ft 3 story that i'm refurbing to 60 real easy, and will do better if i turn it up using about 50# of wood pellets or corn. pellets are running ~$3.50/40# bag right now in IA

We have a Harmon fire place insert pellet stove and we love it. It's in our basement and keeps it toasty down there and makes the wood floors upstairs feel a lot warmer.Does it save me money? I think so, The propane furnace does not run that offten with the stove going. But I think if my teenage kids would close the door behind them when they go out would save me even more. I paid $136 a ton for 3 tons last fall.

Englander Stove, been using it 5 years now. No thermostat, has 9 manual heat level settings. Nice steady, even heat. Approx 900 sq ft log cabin with 3 additions built since 1960. Northern Mn on lake. Paid 3.79/bag(190/ton) yesterday for pellets, use around 200-240 bags a season. Keeps the house at atound 70 deg F using ceiling fans to help the blower with circulation. Keep bedroom, around a corner & down a long hall at around 60-65 F, nat gas unit in BR kicks in when outside drops to around 0 deg & north wind comes off lake. Gas insert in original cabin fireplace in living room kicks in at around zero outside to help. Stove has heat capacity, but circulation needs help. Lots cleaner thae regular wood, & save money using free trash bags.

We bought a American energy systems duel fuel called a magnum(now) 4 winters ago just after we bought this house we are now in(built in 1944 and moved to current location in 1963, needs most of the windows replaced(that's another story). At the time, the fellow we bought from had filled the propane tank the winter before 4 times at a cost of approx 300 dollars each time. I gave 2400 for the stove and burn approx 2 tons a winter at approx 2-300 dollars a ton now. We have the same tank of propane that we bought after the first year, I filled the tank in Oct, and put in the stove in December, I believe we filled that tank again the next fall and that was 3 years ago. Our stove sits in the living room corner(furthest from the thermostat, which is in the back bedroom). the stove has 5 settings and we have only once had it above 3, like to run us out of there. the front room will be around 80 deg. and the back bedroom will stay around 72 deg. use a floor fan to move the air around we will also use the furnace fan now and again when it is real cold out. usually around here gets down to the teens at night and in the 30 during the day(south central Kansas), for about 3-4 months. We start the stove on wood pellets, 1 bag a season, and then turn on the auger for the corn. I bought approx 2 tons of corn this winter, store it in a hopper I bought at a farm auction, and I buy from the CO-OP in the fall after harvest. I only sit on 5 acres so don't really have the room (equipment) to grow my own. It's the best thing since sliced bread. We just love ours, cleaner and a lot less hassle than using wood. They have a furnace type that you can hook up to your existing ductwork. I believe they are located in Minnesota with dealers all over the US, you'll have to check about the Great North. When we do it again, I'm going to put in the furnace and make a bin/auger combo to load dirctly into the stove. good luck, Kent

I have a pellet stove, American Harvest. I spent $2200 on the stove and installed it myself. I will save about $700 or more on Propane usage this year. I will go through about 2 tons of pellets. Pellets are about $220/ton. My stove will burn shelled feed corn too. My Propane is about $1.70/gallon now. I will save more money next winter as I will have the wife turn the thermostat down to 60 in the AM instead of 65. I dont run the pellet stove in the daytime when I am at work.

Hi Terry,

This is a fairly simple answer. Go to your oil burner and read the rated input BTU/hr. Take that number times .80 would equal the output BTU/hr. .80 is 80% efficient. Some of the newer oil burner designs can reach 90% and some older designs 75%.

Your wood stove has to output the same number BTU/hr as the oil furnace or it will not keep up with your heating demand for your area and size house.

Always use BTU/hr when comparring fuel types or heating/cooling units as this is the only 100% accurate method.

Now that's said, Your once again limiting your fuel suorce to one time of fuel with a pellet only stove. Get one that can burn any type of fuel as then you can use the cheapest fuel source for that year.

You used about 140 million BTU for your past heating season, 140,000BTU x 1000gal= 140m/BTU. This will also be your heating requirement for your new fuel type. Using this BTU number will tell you how much the new fuel will cost when comparred to your past oil usage.

You do realize that a oil burner can burn used motor, vegetable(fryer), waste oil? You may need to preheat and filter and mix the oil before use. The sun or waste stack heat can be used to preheat the oil very easy.

A insulation contractor will probably have a inferred temperature gun that can shoot your house to tell where your loosing heat. It just might save you some money no matter what type of heat your using. You can get a ball park figure using a $100 temperature gun.

Hey terryjd,
i"ve just bought (today) a Harmon pellet stove, 50000btu output to replace a Blaze King wood stove (that has rusted out after ten seasons work). I would have stayed with wood, but every year i seem to find it harder to find the time to get firewood chopped/split/stacked/cut etc (you get the idea), plus everyone i know with a pellet stove has a lot less dust in the house. Our old wood stove was 45000btu if i remember right, and manged to heat a newish (late 80"s) 2800sq ft house. On those real cold Manitoba nights like early feb, with -40 and big winds the forced air electric furnace did kick in most nights, but once the temps got back to-20ish the wood stove kept things rolling along. Mind you the house isn"t hot, i keep it around 17C/62F most of the time, although i"ve been known to crank it up sometime. We used a table fan close to the wood stove to move the air around, that worked OK especially during the day, but at night the air sort of stopped moving as much, the new Harmon has a built in fan to move the air, so we"ll have to see how that works... There"s no reason you can"t leave the fan on your furnace running to move the air around the house, but it might not move the heat as well as you"d like.

Make sure that you get a top grade pellet some cheaper ones don't put out the same heat.
I use Golden Blaze its made right down the road from me.

Wayne about $200 a ton last year. I use about 2 1/2 ton per year but its still cheaper than Electric or buying wood at $185 and up for Oak per cord and 6 to 7 cord a year. OH and a lot cleaner with less work.

If 'rice' coal is available in your area, it may be a better alternative. Around here, price per pound is comperable to wood pellets. However the BTU per pound is much higher. Operation is about the same effort as a wood pellets. I work with 2 people who switched from Propane to this type of coal stove. Their annual heating cost went from $4000 to $700 and they are actually warm. I am switching from heating with oil to coal this comming summer. Good luck.

$230 per ton, unbagged, is the going rate around here. The hard Anthracite coal may not be available everywhere. I would probably find your local stove dealer and ask them where to buy the coal.
