This happened about 30 miles from me to a farm family we know here in Iowa. Vandals opened the gates on a couple hoop barns and let all the hogs out then proceeded to chase them across the muddy farm fields and run them over with a pickup (or more than one, still under investigation).

I would think when they are caught we could do the same to them in return?...

I don"t know about in other states, but here in NC the law is pretty tough about damaging someone"s livestock. I live in an isolated area and I haven"t had problems with people messing with my stuff, but isolation can be a double edged sword.

Reminds me of what i seen on the local news some drunks did a similar thing to a stable full of horses only some of them were in the back of the truck shooting the worst thing was they were still sober enough to hit what they was aiming at. If thing were differnt they would have made the news agian after the public hanging.

I've got a small 4 letter word for ya: PETA. form what I read it sound a heck of a lot like Peta at work again. what I would do to those that did that ,if they were peta members, wouldn't be right to say on this site. Just my 2cents.

Well this may go astray from the subject line, but what the h@ll is it with people today ??? I can think of all the dumb and stupid things we did as kids, at most a nuisance, prank, annoyance or just mischief some kids worse than others, but all of us knew better than to do something as sadistic as this and many of us did not have much quality time with our parents because both were working just to put food on the table and keep a roof over our heads, most times we had to figure things out for ourselves as they were not there, or we were too busy with the chores we had to do, school, sports and sharing in the work that kept things going.

It just seems to be more prevalent today, why ? Does the internet expose more bad news and things that have just been going on for years anyway or do my instincts tell me correctly that this society is becoming less than desirable at an alarming rate?

Coed murdered in NC, darned governor here turns out to be as stupid as one can get in an entire lifetime, people shooting up schools, and all the rest you see day in and day out, I think a person can get depression or anxiety from just reading the news today, when is it ever about anything good ? Projecting negativity is my least favorite attitude towards anything, but it's everywhere today. The things people do to each other let alone animals, is just absurd. I can remember people my grandparents age always saying this country is going to heck, the way it's being run etc. this politician, or that one, I always took this with a grain of salt, being a lot younger, naaah, this is the U.S., the greatest place on earth in my eyes, being proud of what we do have, and just thinking it's just old age grumpy'ness etc., but I am beginning to believe that some of em were right on the bullseye then !

Somewhere there was in the news a person who was from Iran that was of the persuasion that prefers the same gender ( not going there on here ) point being, he knows that when deported back to Iran, they will execute him, he's probably chock full of fear right now knowing what is going to happen to him.

Whatever happened to instilling fear upon people so that when the thought comes into your mind, say when unlatching that gate to a pen full of hogs, downing a six pack, thinking it's going to be a fun evening running over animals that cannot even defend themselves it would stop you from doing it, per say if the law read that you would get the same exact treatment when caught and convicted ? It's getting to that point, breakdown of authority and no fear of what will happen to you when you are caught doing the things we read about today ? One just can't even comprehend why so many people do the things they do without any conscience of it all, just toss the kids off the bridge onto the highway, you'll get 3 squares a day for life.

Boy, what to say....

I've got four boys, the oldest is almost 13.

Boys need someone in their lives to lay down and explain the boundaries in life (ie: a father). Someone who won't give an inch in a confrontation. Someone who is hardheaded enough to believe that some things are just simply WRONG and you don't do them, or else. Most especially, boys need this when they are YOUNG.

I hate to admit this, but I have caught each one of my boys doing things to animals that they thought were "fun". Let's just say that justice was swift and sure. A ton of bricks falling on you makes the first offence the last offence.

Anyway, this is tough for me to put into words. Ever since my wife and I got married, I knew that one of the principle jobs of my life would be being a father to my children. I have never seen it any other way. In the last almost 15 years my wife and I have had someone "babysit" exactly twice, and both times were for emergencies. We don't have fancy toys. To my regret, we don't really have anything saved for retirement (what is that anyway?) other than our land, etc. But it is worth it knowing that my kids will not be a hazard, nor a liability to society. What they actually do in life is their business, but it is my (and my wife's) business to point them in the right direction.

I know it isn't "touchy-feely" to say this, but kids need discipline, and from an early age.

Well, I hope I said something meaningful.

Christopher

what you said was true and needed said. Too many parents chasing new cars and fancy toys to be bothered actually raising- including discipline- kids. Society disentegrates more. *sigh*

I once had a problem with coon hunters and firewood pilferers driving in a remote crossing over a road ditch. I parked a disc across the drive to block it.

The next night when no one was home, someone drove in our yard and shot out a mercury vapor yard light.

Speaking of firewood, I read in a history of Omaha that in 1857 a firewood dealer had problems with pilferage. He took about 20 pieces of firewood, augered a 2" hole in the center, filled them with gun powder, and tapped a plug back in the end.

He then put them on the end of the stack where they would be easy to snitch. After the neighbor's wood burning kitchen ranges began blowing up at random, the pilferage stopped.

Try that today and see how soon you're in court!

I had to take the wife to Salem yesterday for blood test and on the way out I saw the cow at the creek looking down in it so i stopped and heard the new 1 day old calve calling so I went over to look and sure enough it was in the creek. I pulled it out with a rope and it was OK. when i went out today she was calling it over to her because it did not want to climb the steep hill coming into the barn. By the time i got out there she was down and bringing him around the steep short cut.
Darn Cows anyway.
I had change my wet clothes before going to town.

I had a neibhor that had his fence charger stolen. Came home from work and 200 hogs all over the place. It took us until the next day to get them all back in, some got into the woods and neibhors yards.

Sickning...when they find them, they should be sentenced to work for the pig farm. 1 year for every animal killed. this will make others think twice.

Equally strange, in the article at the bottom. The woman stuck on the toilet for 2 YEARS! They had to pry her off. And the police are investagating....I will probably be a while....since they have nothing to go on.'

Sorry I couldnt help myself...stop giggling. It was probably horrible.

We had some college students here go out "cow tippin" one night. Well, they tipped about 15 cows on one guys farm when before noticed weird lights out in his field and went to investigate. He was able to walk right up on the group of kids since it was dark and when the finally noticed he was there, they were looking down the barrel of a rifle aimed across the hood of their car. Being Massachusetts is mostly a screwed up state run by laywers and cronnies, the farmer was able to be sued for threatening the kids and he lost just about everything he had. Such a shame.

Cow tipping that is some real nonesense, you really believe you can do that. I have walked throught thousands of cows at night when calving and mine always know I'm around. Myth only.

We put locks on every gate on our place. We don't have stock, but thieves will steal the gates if you don't. I don't know what I would do if I caught someone doing this. This kind of behavior just escapes my understanding.

since they don't like pigs maybe they should spend some time in a nice warm swine free place like Iraq.I'm sure the government would provide the free transportation lodging and 4 years of employment while they are there. If they are unfit for military service then when it's found out who these people are, maybe some locals should rub them down in sow estres and lock these perpetrators up with the boars for a while
