I've got an old '93 big cab 4X4/auto with a 5.2L in it and 178K on the odo. It averages 17.5 mpg and has been a good one; still don't have to add oil between changes at every 3-4K. :)

My 92 Dakota long bed, 4x4, 5-speed, V6 gets about 19.5 mpg over the long haul, some winter driving 4wd, some summer long trips, etc.

This is what you do. Go to a England junk yard. Buy a 175hp diesel from the same truck. Install it. You'll get 35 mpg. Don't tell anyone or they'll take it and throw you in jail.

Can anyone show me a compact truck that gets good mileage? Yours sounds typical. I have a 98 Ranger 4x4 with a 3L V-6 that gets about the same or perhaps a bit worse. 16-18 is about normal for the way I drive. 24 is the absolute best I did and that was once and traveling most of the time at 50-55 mph. Little trucks, for whatever reason simply don't get good mileage it seems. This one has 4.10's that don't help it either, but it wouldn't be very driveable without them considering the torque it has... I'd expect the Dakota to be about the same.

Chevy LUV got 44mpg in reply to RodInNS, 03-14-2008 11:34:46
1981 Chevy LUV with an Isuzu C223 diesel engine making 58 hp gave the 2WD a fuel economy rating of 33 city / 44 hwy. This engine is also renowned for its reliability; many LUV trucks of this vintage have achieved over 500,000 miles before requiring a rebuild.

great lil' truck, raggedy frame. ours is held together with welding rod. next door neighboor bought 2 new, ran 'em both forever, took pity on us and gave us one for farm use. probably has a half million miles on it

The 3.0L is a POS in a little pickup (and not much better in a Taurus). I had a 1990 Ranger with the 2.9L and it averaged 26 MPG with every tank (2WD 5 Speed long bed). Never checked it on "long" trips since I only used it to drive to work. The EPA killed that engine too.

Actually, the 3L is a pretty good little engine. Good power for what it is and such. It's just not good on gas.
You were fortunate if you got that kind of mileage from a 2.9. I've simply never heard anyone around here tell of good mileage from a 4x4 Ranger. Somewhat better from the 2WD's... but not the the 4x4. Doesn't matter if it's a 2.3, 2.8, 2.9, 3.0 or 4.0. They all suck.
This 3L is really very close to the same as the old 2.3 was in the '92 we had before except that the 3L has a little more giddyup... but not much.

I own a 2006 4 x 2, 3.7 six cyl, quad cab with auto trans and get great mileage. My wife and I went 1200 mile last summer when getting a Farmall B with a 16 ft. trailer and averaged 20.3 mpg. And yes the truck handled it with ease.
In Dec of 2006, we took a trip to Cleveland on Interstate 69 and the toll road with just the truck and averaged right on 24.0 I drive 6 1/2 mile to work and then town driving and get between 19 and 20 mpg.

You didn't mention the year, or if 2WD or 4WD.

Surf to the EPA site below, armed with that information, and see what they say.

(It seems they have revised their testing procedure, making the mileage figures closer to "real-world" results.)

I have a 2000 Dakota crew cab with 4.7, 4wd 5 spd manual and 355 gear ratio.
Makes 16-18 short chase around trips, 20 on long trips.
On a couple of seed runs, with a 1 ton pallet of seed in the box, where I had to follow a seed truck that never exceeded 55 mph, it did 24 mpg. It seems that the low speed helped a lot more than the 1 ton load hurt. Makes me wonder if it would benifit from a gear change from 3.55 up to about 3.00. I think that higher rear gears would help the manual trans gear spread too. With 3.55's, starting in 1st is too low geared, and starting in 2nd is a bit tall if starting up hill.

Very happy with my old 90, super cab Dakota 3.8 ( I think) engine. All ways right at 20 MPG. City or at 70 on the road. 4 speed ( I think) auto trany. Would look for another just like it, only newer.

By any chance what is the final drive ratio on your new truck? A lot of smaller trucks are geared poorly, so that they can tow more with a smaller engine. As a result, they don't get any better milage.

You may also want to make sure that your overdrive is engaging and that the transmission is actually locking up in the gears.

Believe that's the old 318. Just slightly newer than rocks. Decide in haste, regret in leisure. Well, it sounds good and will be guzzling for a dependable long time.

Wife has an 03 Durango w/4.7. Average back and forth driving is around 14. Took it from MN to Arkansas last Thanksgiving, checking it on highway miles it was over 19. That was on the road though, I`m sure it was 14 or worse for the time we were down there visiting and running around...

I have a 2000 2x2 quad cab with 4.7. It has 3:55 gears and auto. I get anywhere from a low of 14 to a high one time going to Wichita-470 miles-of 21. Made it all the way without refilling. My 94 regular cab with 318 and 5 speed 4x4 will average around 15 on short 5 mile runs. My sons 97 club cab, 2x2 with V6 and auto gets an average of 17. A little head wind or a good tail wind makes a big difference in them. My daughters 03 Durango with 4.7 and auto 4x4 averages 14 running around, alittle better on longer trips.
