I was coming up the lane with a ton of fertilizer and my 89 Dodge w/318 pickup just died. I checked the computer codes the which resulted in code 11 (no distributor reference signal detected during cranking).

I have no spark coming out of the coil. I have cracked the fuel line under the frame and no fuel pressure. It has a in tank fuel pump and is throttle body fuel injected.

The Chilton manual says if the auto shutdown relay (ASD) is tripped by the electronic ingition control box that the fuel pump and ingition will not work. However it doesn't state how to determine whether the ASD was tripped by bad fuel pump, bad distributor pickup or faulty brain box.

This pickup has a long history of burning up fuel pumps (approx. 4). Does anyone have any suggestions for determining which parts are faulty without replacing them each willie nillie.

This happened with my 89 Dakota with 3/4 of a 318. It was the Hall Effect pick-up in the distributor. It is kinda like chanoing a set of points.

My 89 chevy had problems with fuel pumps for the former owner. I bought it non running with the fuel tank in the box. When installing the new tank we found one of the wires that fed the pump had cracked insulastion and was full of corrosion. Replaced the wire and no fuel pump problems since I"ve owned it. My 93 chevy wanted to die every so often, but would usually start again later. After replacing fue pump, fuel pump relay and $500 in other parts I found where somebody had spliced the wires that feed the distrubitor respliced them no problem since. Lee

Trust your code reader. Remove your dist cap and see if the rotor is turning ,think it will be. If rotor is turning replace dist plate. It has 2 screws holding it in.You must have offset screwdriver or will need to pull dist.DO NOT REPLACE FUEL PUMP IF YOU HAVE NO SPARK.david chrysler master tech

before you change pump run a hot wire to the pump to make sure it's not working also use a ground wire

CHANGE THE FUEL PUMP they will not have any fire with out fuel pressure have a 1990 and it did the same thing replaced fuel pump took right off. i had a full tank of gas so i just cut a hole in the floor of the box to pull the pump out instead of dropping the tank a lot easier then lay a patch over the hole

It should still have spark though, check the distributer out first rather than just throwing expensive and hard to change parts at it.

Had a 90 Dakota w/ 318 that was bad about wearing out a bushing in the dist. and braking off rotor.Put an aftermarket in it from Accell, truck still runs good, according the guy who has it now.

Can you see whether your valves are moving or not? Detector for distributor is likely on the cam. If you busted a timing chain/belt . . .

Does your truck have an impact sensor/switch that turns off the fuel pump in the event of an accident. It might also shut off the spark. In cars they are located in the trunk usually and can be reset. Maybe with that load and a bump ?
I have seen cars trip it from bumping a parking curb.

Check all the wiring going to your to your distributer. It is probably something really simple, I wouldn't give up on the old girl yet. You can throw a lot of parts at it before you enchroach on the price of a new pickup payment, and they break too.

Here is something that might help get you started, it is for the 94+ trucks though. Hopefully between it and your Chilton's it can get you in the right direction.

You seem to have lots of pump problems, i would test it first by running a wire from the battery and see if it pumps. My sisters car would sometimes blow the fuse to the pump and guys trying to help would start takeing things apart. Finally got her to call me first.

Dist reference signal should come from a sensor on the camshaft. That tells computer where the engine is rotation wise for timing. Could be sensor or cam not turning.

Time to find a decent 5 year old pickup. No matter what you do. After spending that time and $$$. It's still a worn out 19 year old pickup.

That"s the problem, it"s not old enough. A 5 year old pickup will be even harder to troubleshoot than a 19 year old pickup. What he really needs is a 29 plus year old pickup that doesn"t have as much or any computer crap on it and is easy to troubleshoot. But that"s just my view since I work on all my own stuff. The way I see it with the old stuff I don"t have to worry about thousands of dollars worth of scan tools, etc and then having to add to the collection with every new year or vehicle.

The OBDII stuff is the easiest to trouble shoot. Just plug in the code reader. And double check with an multimeter. The mileage, ride and reliability of the newer stuff makes the 1989 as waste of time and $$$. My scan tool incluides a programmer and it was less than $300.00. The old stuff without a feedback loop to control the airfuel mixture. And being without a lockup overdrive transmission. They are just wasting fuel. I"m amazed at the number of people who know little about electricity and are terrified by it.
