OT: Useless gossip!

I had a leaking fuel line on my car. But apparently it's old enough the return hose has been discontinued and GM wants $70 for a special-ordered feed hose for my fuel injection. 91 Pontiac Grand Prix LE, 3.1-191 V6, MPI, yadda yadda.

So I wandered into NAPA to see if I could get a better price than from a car dealer and found out it was unavailable. But I was told that was common with a lot of GM parts right now, especially the little ones that break regularly. GM won't give up the patents, I was told, and so NAPA can't find aftermarket suppliers for the parts.

It's part of a plan, see. GM is going broke, and Ford is looking to buy GM. But GM is holding on to the intellectual property, angling for a better price tag in the buyout. GM didn't do a hybrid, and that hurt 'em, bad. But Ford is gonna keep the GM stuff going after the deal, and then they're planning on cutting prices to corner the market, driving out competition from overseas.

Of course you know the feds won't stand for that. Monopolies are illegal in this country.

But as much as I'm not a Ford fan, I almost welcome the idea. It could feasibly have marvelous implications for the US economy if the cars continue to be made here in the good ol' USA.

This is what I heard from the kid behind the counter. I'm not calling my stock broker just yet. :)

I dont think Ford is going to buy anything. I work at a ford dealer, and business is bad, Fords in big trouble. GM is much better off, and Chrysler probably is too. Ford will go belly up before any of the others do.

You should try a store that makes hoses. Our local parts store can make just about any hose. Just need the old hose so they install the correct fittings. Hal

Guys, I think we're going a little weird. GM is much, much healthier financially than Ford and theres not an analyst or industry expert that would dispute that. Auto companies in the U.S. are the most studied, analyzed and monitored companies in the world.

What is being discussed is whether Cerebus Capital which bought Chrysler is loosing buckets of money daily and is actuall prepping to quickly sell the company.

Look at industry publications on who is spending money on research and development and who isn't and you can quickly see who is going to be in business and who is not long term.

GM has and is developing all sorts of alternative fuel, electric, fuel cell vehicles etc. You can buy a hybrid Tahoe or Yukon right now in any GM dealership.

If you need a fuel line, buy a fuel line from somebody who has one or make your own. My NAPA store has some of the finest people and parts of any place I shop.

I'm still not sure what a bad fuel line to do with the future viability of world wide vehicle mfgrs.

Ford is in bad, real bad shape. They sold off all their patents and have nothing left to sell. Expect Ford to go belly-up and get purchased by a foreign manufacturer.
Chrysler is doing what needs to be done to survive, time will tell. GM still has some assets so I expect it to continue.

When you get the chance to sell a dead horse, you sell it. Ford sold Sterling to Freightliner, same as GM sold Detroit Diesel to Freightliner.

NAPA would be the last place I'd ever look for an uncommon part.

In regard to what you were told, i.e. " . . .I was told that was common with a lot of GM parts right now, especially the little ones that break regularly. GM won't give up the patents, I was told, and so NAPA can't find aftermarket suppliers for the parts. "

I don't believe any of it. NAPA doesn't search for obsure slow-moving parts - they strive to stock common items that make them fast money. You might find a person that owns a NAPA that is more helpful - but if so - that's due to that person, not NAPA. GM, Ford, et. al. are required by law to keeps parts available only for 7 years - and no longer. Considering so much is subbed out, and they make so little themselves anymore - they drop many parts after awhile - and I don't blame them. I don't believe patents have much to do with any of it - and if they did, NAPA wouldn't know anyway. I find many parts that NAPA says are unavailalble - yet go down the road and PartsAmerica or Carquest can get them. And, with the latter - they are not in business to sell obscure parts either. I often find parts that none of them say are available - I've yet to be stumped yet. If a part is not mass-produced for public sale, there is usually somebody somewhere making them on a small scale.

Yea, and Mahindra tractors will take over the US market. That piece of junk you mentioned is illegal in the US for lots of reasons; by the time they make it street legal most of the cost and weight advantages will be gone.

Question I have on hybrids is the cost. All are several thousand more than a standard engine. Better milage, less pollution, but the payback period is years. How ya gonna sell em?

2) GM has several hybrids out. I haven't seen a Ford hybrid yet.

I can't speak to the rest of it, but Ford has had a couple hybrids on the road for a year or two.

This is so weird, I don'tknow where to start:

1) Ford has mortgaged everything, including the blue oval Ford name, to stay afloat.

2) GM has several hybrids out. I haven't seen a Ford hybrid yet.

3) GM is in better financial shape than Ford.

4) BTW, the new Ford 6 speed trans is a GM design. Ford couldn't afford it's own, and needed a 6 speed. Last I heard, GM was still supplying a lot of companies with parts, including Japanese brands and Porsch.

5) Having said all that, nothing is forever. I have realatives that work at Ford, I work at GM, and I used to work for chrysler. Nobody who works in this business should get too complacent. Things change quickly.

What kind of line do you need... steel, rubber, plastic?

There are kits available to custom make MANY types of fuel lines.

Find an idependant repair shop with the right kit, and they should be able to make up what you need.

For axamples of a couple of the kits, take a look at the following ebay auctions...

#300146675216

#170107601333

#270221779229

#120234700221

Oh, yeah, and Rots of Ruck, Ford!

I don't think we have to worry about Ford buying anything. They sold out their heavy duty truck line to Freightliner in 1997, they needed the money bad. In 1998 Freightliner named the trucks Sterling. By the way Freightliner is owned by Daimler(ex Chrysler owner). Now Chrysler is privately owned and still in money troubles.
