Someone sent me this email showing a spider bite after 3 days and after 10 days. Their bite kills the skin. So be wary of any spiders. I don't know where this occurred. Hal

Brown recluse "spider bites" can indeed be horrific. Unfortunately so can many other diseases and processes that can cause similar necrotizing lesions. Spider bites are often diagnosed based on little proof and frequently in most areas of this country where there are No documented colonies of this critter. Theoretically they could move anywhere where people move, however, lack of caution and overzealous diagnosing of "loxoscelism" can lead to misdiagnosis and potential delays in treatment of other underlying problems. We should be fatr more careful to positively I.D. these critters before adding further to the already immense folklore on the subject!

He will be lucky if he keeps his thumb. They are extremely venomous. I've seen pictures of much worse. We've got the browns and the widows here in Tx. Biggest spiders I see are the yellow & black ones. They get 4 and 5 inches across. I grew up in Wichita Falls and we would see tarantulas occasionally, but they never bothered me. The yellow and black ones give me the creeps when they get that big.

I keep one in the house now.

Link ..... Thanks! Here's a link to a page on there that shows the distribution of this type of spider: Link

We've got them around here; we call them fiddle-back spiders. My neighbor across the road has them but doesn't have black widows; I don't have the fiddle-backs but do have the widows. I figured that maybe the widows eat the recluses  but ..... who knows?

son of a friends of ours put on old pair of tennis to help his dad in barn. brown recluse was also using shoe for a home. he got bite and soon had a very sore foot, his mom thought he was trying to put one over on her as he didn't want to do something. when she looked at his foot she took him to doctor who told them it's a good thing you didn't wait any longer. he had problems for 3 or 4 months with that foot.

My sister got bit on the right side of her belly about 14 years ago while working in the office at a bolt and nut distrubitor. They think she actually got bit out in the warehouse, not in the office itself. Either way when Isaw the bite it didn"t look quite as bad as the pic but it did leave a pretty sizable wound and a nice scar when it finally healed. The brown recluse releases a necrotoxin which literally kills the cell tissue in the area around the bite. Once the tissue actually dies it gets to looking like the guys hand in the pic. Actually it looks alot like the results from a bad case of frostbite where the same thing happens and the tissue dies. Different reasons for the tissue death, but about the same results. Just for the record a brown recluse or "fiddle back" is typically a smaller spider but I think alot of people tend to mistake the wolf spider, which usually get rather large, as being one of them since they tend to inhabit the same types of places. I don"t know that I"ve ever seen a "large" recluse but I caught a female wolf spider several years ago who"s legs were larger around than a wide mouth mason jar. Dad said it was the biggest spider he had ever seen. I also caught a black widow about a year ago and put her egg sack in with her intending to send it to school with my room mate"s son. They like getting things like that so the city kids have a chance to actually see the spiders that they should avoid. I stuck the plastic jar on a shelf in the shop and forgot about it for several weeks. When I finally remembered it the eggs had hatched and there were probably a thousand little bitty spiders all over the inside of the jar. Needless to say there there was a double layer of masking tape got put over the existing air holes on the top to keep the little buggers in. The teacher loved it because it was something you don"t typically get to see.

I went to training and was later stationed at FLW, Mo. I don't think there was a wall anywhere on post that didn't have pictures of all the poisonous snakes of the area and our friendly brown recluse spider alongside the horror pictures of people that were bit. Funny part was, as much time as we spent in the woods and on ranges etc, the people that were bit was bit in the barracks. Guess the spider didn't like the heat either.

All true.
Buddy of mine was bit on the mid section during vacation in Texas. I would have killed him except for 3-4 of inches of beer belly. Had a drain tube in there for weeks.
Only good thing about it, he's never had gout since.

I live in a brown recluse area, and have been bitten by one. I kill them all. One female can produce 80 off spring. A shed or out building in our area can become infested in a short time. I spray quite regularly. The small ones are bad, but these things can get big. I have seen them as large as 50 cent coin or dollar coin. Those I am afraid of, they are very aggressive also. They can travel to! I had a coworker at my former job that was retired from Chrysler Corp. He worked in Detroit or Lansing in one of the factories. He was uncrating some machinery, or parts from South America. He had one fall on him, and bite him on the forhead, still has the scar to this day. That was years ago.

Thats a real photo. I have known men to lose their legs because of a spider bite from a brown recluse. He was bit in the upper leg, and after a week had a hole that he could stick his fist into to bone. They aren't anything to be near thats for sure. I have seen worse than this, just type in spider bite in a search engine, and see what pain people suffer from these things.

Brown recluse bite is serious.

Checking into a hospital is normal, in the hope they can keep you alive until you recover.

It is not doctored. I have a video of a fellow bit on the leg. If you live in brown recluse territory and you think you have been bit, find a physician that has experience treating the bite.

Larry I'm not trying to jag you. I know a fellow that got bit by a spider,I think around here we call them "wolf spiders"on the back side of his knee. That thumb looks good. My freind never did get full use of his leg after that.
