The fuel gauge on my 1968 jd 3020 is not working. Is there a way to test the gauge? Don't know if the gauge is bad or the sending unit, or is there a way to test the sending unit, hate to buy a new gauge if its the sender.

JMS offered good advice. I would add that you may want to check the continuity of the wire also.

Easies way is to us a tester on the guage end and ground the terminal that does not have 12 v when the key is on. Also may want to make sure that there is juice to the guage.

just stick a broom handle in the tank to measure cheaper than fixing

That"s a nice thing about older tractors- still works. On my 4430, 4240, and 4450-there is a baffle in the top of the tank....bummer!

Remove the wire at the sending unit. Keyswitch ON, touch the wire to frame, etc to ground it. That should peg the needle- means sender is bad. If not, replace the gauge first.

Thanks for the help, seems the gauge is bad. My next Question is do you need a + ground gauge, I bought this tractor at a sale an trying to get the wireing fixed.Looks like one wire gos to the sender an the other can come off the 12v oil light to the fuil gauge .I checked wire at the light got 12v- ground, this is a 1968 tractor 24v diesel, can't figure why I need a + ground gauge thanks skinner
