Need to rebuild our 1100. This tractor is for work, not for show. Will be a complete rebuild. Are the kits sold here high quality, or do any of you have a preference. I'm trying to keep from having to borrow another tractor this winter to spread with. Were quoted $5000 to rebuild, but think will be much cheaper if we supply the parts. TIA

TISCO is a "Box company" they don't make them either. First of all did you read where they bored the sleeves out. Perkins sleeves are tight fit!. Perkins also used to supply 30 over pistons for those engines and the first overhaul was you bored the block. Also not all 354 Perkins are alike nor do they take the same kit.

Where are you getting it rebuilt? Most shops have a parts supplier, and get a % of the repairs to cover expenses, will they work on it if you supply the parts? I would be concerned that you would get put off to the side when a customer buying parts comes it and needs his fixed first, you might have to wait a LONG time to get yours back. A 750 MF combine has a 354 Perkins, I'm for finding one that runs and doing a motor swap. I did that with my Oliver 1850 and am pleased with the results and was a lot cheaper. Chris

Does it a 354 Perkins? If its the same as the one in a combine you might a good one in a worn out combine 510 had the 354. Lee

$5000 to rebuild the engine and they do everything? That's cheap if you ask me. I'd get it in writing. That's a 100 Hp engine. Unless you're experienced, or know someone who is to help you, I think $5000 is more than reasonable. I spent around $7000 doing a 4 cylinder engine in a Cat and it was only 65 HP. I only used Cat parts that weren't available aftermarket.Pulling the engine I'll do myself. Rebuilding it, I'd prefer to have someone experienced do it that will warrantee their work and stand behind it. I needed warrantee too for some really bizarre but serious problems. Just my opinion. Rebuilt my 1100 back in '04 cost $1300 for the complete kit from Perkins. also bought a connecting rod and some lifters a few hoses for $300, $500 for machine shop work this included all the head work and had to bore out the old sleeves in the block and line bored the connecting rod bearings and cam bearings. also spent about $400 on tools. Any questions feel free to get a hold of me.

Open shed, basic tools, shadetree mechanic in the literal sense, and am getting myself neck deep in redoing our cab tractor. I just need the answer to my origional post. Plan on running the tractor this fall, so not an urgent need, but pressing. I'm going through the stage of learning to take better care of my equipment.

If this was a tractor for fun, maybe, but this is my main tillage tractor, and I can't afford to learn on it. However, should the oppurtunity present itself for a Ferguson 40 or a Farmall 504 Diesel I would. Real problem is I lack a good shop to do the work in.

mostly you just need a engine stand and a shop big enough to keep you and the engine in, some tools, and dry. One of my neighbors took his engine to a shop before Christmas and it still sits in his yard without the engine. sometimes the shops can take a while

are you going to do the work? I'm sure with the help of these guys you could save the labor also. Some of the work will need to be farmed out like the machine work but the rest is just going through the proper steps to ensure that it stays together.
