O/T quad jet carb tired time for swap question

i have a AFB Carter, sitting on shelf for few yrs got off a camaro i junked few yrs back & i have a chance at a eldbrok carb on a runing eng for 400 can resell the eng for 300 the carb sells at parts store for almost 300. anyway my quad jet is giving me problems on my old 72 gmc 4x4 so was thinking of putting one of the others on but dont know much about carter. or eld. carbs i know they will mount to my manifold with a adaptor plate whats your inputs on the other 2 carbs ?

Got to agree with Allan. I have 4 chevy trucks all big blocks with Q-jets work great

I have an AFB carb and Weiand (sp)manifold on my 360 Dodge, and it's gonna go soon and the origional 2BBL carb and manifold are going back on. I've messed around with it for ten years, never getting it quite right. Runs great going down the road but idleing in warm weather and hot starting is another subject. Maybe something wasn't set up right from the beginning, I do profess to not being not much of a car/pickup guy, but she's going back to factory anyway.Jim

Fix the Q-Jet.I"ve been through about every carb imaginable and Rochesters(pre feed-back)are the best all around(even hi-perf street/strip aps)carbs around in my opinion.

Also the easiest and cheapest to get parts for.

I'd fix what you have.

I put a Carter AFB on our Ford and had problems with it. The floats are side to side and on a slight incline wanted to overfuel the down hill side. I picked up some model of Holley and have been VERY happy with it. It is a model with NO POWER VALVE make sure you get this one as the ones with a power valve are nothing but trouble.

If anything, the Carter AFB (aluminum four barrel) is a bit simpler then the Rochesters. Rochester had a series with the same all-four-the-same series along with the unequal Quadrajets.
Any old carb can need work - I'm not sure what you're hoping to gain.

Most Edelbrock carbs ARE Carter AFBs - copied and manufactured by Weber with the Carter design - and many parts interchange.

I still have two Buick Nailheads with AFBs on them and they've been fine.

I'm a big fan of the Edelbrock for "knock around" applications- it's pretty much a bombproof carb, and judging by the giant "W" on the top I am guessing it's really a weber, which means quality in carburation. I've replaced a pile of Q-Jets with these, most recently on my big block 84 chevy dually, and it straightend that 454 right out.
Depending upon the carb you have, you may need an adaptor to get that "spreadbore" pattern. Common- everyone has 'em- check Summit.

That AFB is pretty much a "resto" carb now

The WCFB and the AFB were the reason that the Q-Jet was born.

I'd sure stay with the quadrajet. Just a better unit all the way around.

I suspect one or more of your carbs could be had with either the "speadbore" quadrajet pattern or the Holley-style "square" pattern.

You'll have to take a look to see what you have.

What's wrong with the Quadrajet? Throttle bore bushings, perhaps? I have the kit to replace them... reamers and bushings. Repairing that area often solves a LOT of problems. Also, a bad choke pulloff/secondary diaphragm or mis-set secondary air valve spring are sticking power piston will cause problems with the Quad. They really are NOT a bad carb, and don't hold a lot of fuel to boil off every time the engine is shut off "hot", like some carbs do (especially Holleys). This saves gas AND prevents a bunch of gas flooding the engine every time it's shut off hot.

The Edelbrocks are very tunable, with LOTS of experience, AND a parts kit, neither of which I have, so I can't make much of a comment about them, only the Quads, as I have LOTS of experience with them.
