As if anyone who has lived on a farm does not know how dangerous it can be. Here is a reminder. Dad had the header off of a pull type chopper. Some stuff was clogged and not going into the feeder rollers if I heard the story correct. Machine running dad pushed it with his left foot, left foot got pulled in. The machine basically de-boned his left foot and at that point he was able to pull himself from the machine. This machine could have taken even more than his foot. Thank god that did not happen. Dads in the hospital and recovering. He has had 2 surgeries so far and will probably get a prosthetic. He is 74 and rather tough. But something like this would be very hard for anyone at any age. Remind yourself, your family how dangerous a farm can be when you make a mistake or bad judgement as any one of us can do. For privacy, I will not post where this happened.

He has had 2 surgeries. Will be getting another one monday. I talked to him for the first time after this accident sunday evening for about 5 minutes. I surely would not blame this on the machines manufacturer. I'm sure this will have an emotional effect on him, but I think he will weather that. The rural area that he lives in is very supportive to its neighbors. My dad lives on the opposite side of the world. One of my brothers lives about 1000 miles from him. I thank you for the prayers for my dad. He needs all he can get.

Friend of mine got his foot in one about 10 years ago. Has had prosthetic from knee down now for about 10 years. He is much younger than your dad but he has done extremely well since the accident. If you saw him walking anywhere you would have no clue that he had this condition. He is a very reliable worker and always gets his job done every day. Outworks people twice his age two to one and never breaks a sweat doing it. If your dad is a tough guy he will do very well. This guy doesn't even walk with a limp. I don't think he runs anymore but he wasn't planning on joining a football team anyway!

He's darned lucky that it didn't take him all the way in. A wing nut and his cousin are kind of famous around here for putting some calves through one quite a few years ago to see if it would take his brother in. They planned to do away with him for the insurance. The guy did a few years in the big house for that and other atrocities.

Prayers And best wishes for your Dad and all of you. --- I was probably around 10 yrs old when I heard my parents talking about an aquaintance of theirs.--His son was about my age at the time was helping offload a wagon into a silage blower, fell into it head first. His Dad ended in a mental instution. The farm was never taken care of after that and it's growed back to woods.

Lost my right foot in a grain auger when I was 10... no matter what is going on, there should always be time for SAFETY.

Sorry to hear the news, but I bale hay and I have had nightmares about having a similar thing happen to me. But with a round baler it can grab you by the arm and suck you in; all of you.

Decals are all over the equipment that warn you that the machine is faster than you are. It says turn it off before you try to unclog it and they mean it.

It is a pain for me, but when I think of the options, I gladly comply.

Mark

A farmer near here got sucked into his round baler. The ems guys got his son out there, he talked to the old guy for a couple of minutes. When the removed him from the machine, he died. The ems guys could see that when they pulled him out, he was done.

Thank Gd he did not gey pulled in farther. I had an employee working for me that only had 1/2 of his right arm, I must say he out worked 50% of the other employees that had 2 fully functioning arms, any way, he lost it trying to push something in a similar fashion. he was 12 I guess.

FARMS ARE NOT DANGEROUS --- FARMERS ARE DANGEROUS -- AND MOSTLY TO THEMSELVES.

my cousin did the same thing with a corn picker. Got his arm caught in the rolls & stripped flesh off. Kept the arm but was never the same again.
