Well after losing my ol chesapeake a few years back to cancer , we had adopted a Springer Spaniel from the local Humane Society for pets. Had him since July of 05. 5 year old, trained, mello, fun dog. Loves people. He plays base ball with the boys. He's the out feild. One pitches, the other bats and runs, and Jake ( the dog) plays outfeild. He actually will retrieve the ball and try to catch them if the are running the bases. Other wise he runs it back to the pitcher or if only 1 kid, back to the batter. Great Dog. Well, yesterday morning he was bleeding outa his mouth, and it wouldnt stop, after a while decided to bring him to the vet. Turns out his blood wasnt clotting, vet said at some point he musta got into some mouse poisen, we bait the chicken barn heavy at clean out and he musta found some. So a small cut from chewing a stick or something caused the bleeding, transfusion would be 4 times at $700 each. I cant do that. So she gave him a shot and sent some medicine home with me. She said if he makes it past 2 days he be fine, otherwise he will slowly bleed to death. No hard food, no fetching or any other strenous activity. That was sucky news. Told the kids right out, no sense fooling them. So far the bleeding has stopped, he has no lung issues or rectal bleeding so I think he may be in the clear as long as he doesnt get hurt inside or out till the 3 weeks of medicine are through him. Vet said for a dog his size even 3-4 little pellets of bait can kill a 65# dog. Sorry so long just wanted to share. Yes, we do use bait boxes, he must have knocked it around or something to get at some bait.

We had a cat die from eating a mouse that had some poison. Poor thing was writhing around, biting its belly, yowling. Vet said nothing he could do but put it out of it's misery. Neighbor had the poison out.

Gosh, Dave, I'm sorry to hear about that. I hope I get to meet the little fella next week. Sounds like he'd get along with the dog I'll have with me. Oh hey, prayers work for dogs too!

Dave, sorry to hear about your dog. A really nice and safe mouse trap is a five gallon pail filled half way with water, take a plastic pop bottle, drill holes in both ends, insert a piece of coat hanger through the bottle and afix it across the top of pail, put peanut butter on the bottle. Place a small board from the floor to the top of the pail and when the mouse crawls up the board for the peanut butter the bottle will spin and he will succumb to the water. One other thing is to place chicken wire over the top to keep unwanted pets out. Works great for me. Gordy

Dont keep chickens but we have mice problems. Cat loves them and brings them home to play with. We have had good luck with glue traps and also the box type traps you have to empty. The bet thing around a farm is a couple of b;lack snakes . Thet keep tha area almostr critter free.
I would never have poison around if you have any family pets. We think of our animals as family members. Out in the shed we have installed several large electronic ( i know) pest eliminators and they work great.

All your vet does is load them up on vitamin K.....the very same thing doctors do to PEOPLE when they accidentally OD on their blood thinner.

Can you go down to the feed store and see if they have vitamin K on hand? Can you give an injection?

I honestly don"t know how folks afford to keep any kind of livestock or critters and run back and forth to the vet every other week as if taking care of grandma.

Every farmer and/or pet owner should own a good home treatment book..... .search Amazon.com, and learn how to treat their animals. Of course, if you think Fluffy or Spot is a human being, disregard all of the above.

Good Morning Dave,

I sure am sorry to hear about your pal, and I do wish you the very best of luck on his recovery. I hear you on the $700 x 4 bit. It just can't be done. You made the best decision you could, and now it's a waiting game.
As has been mentioned, and maybe you already have them, but a few cats sure do wonders. I give my barn cats a little of the cheapest cat food I find, just enough to keep them around the barn, but not enough to make them full and lazy. Mice and even pigeons don't last long. I actually keep my feed in an open top box and have never seen a mouse in the barn yet. Again, I hope your dog has a quick and full recovery.

We cant have cats "in" the poultry house due to biosecurity procedures. I have been trying to keep cats around the place but they all end up at the house crapping in my garage because they like to be around the people. I know what you mean about cats being the best deterent, just cant seem to get them to stay where the mice may be. Sure helped for the house though. This last cleanout for some reason we had thousands, and I mean thousands of mice, didnt realize we had any till we started taking the manure out. Did not see a single mouse last year when we cleaned, cant figure out what happened, mice getting into the neighbors Viagra or something. This summer I am gonna do a very thorough inspection of the bottem row of tin on the barn, let the cattle graze the grass down on the south side and put chipped granite on the north side. Hopefully I can stop any crevis they can get through. With thousandsof mice I quickly learned they can easily crawl up a 1/8" cable, straight up an post or wall corner, get through a hole the size of a pencil diameter, run up chains links, and jump pretty darned high when been chased by a #12 boot! No rats yet!! That is one thing I do not want, then things give me the creeps. We went through 9 pails of Jaguar, Havoc, and just one bite this year to kill em all(the mice) off. That was more pails than the 1st 3 years here combined. The sticky pads would work good put the dusty conditions quickly ruin the effectiveness. No Calf yet either, fine with me, let this snow melt and dry up, then let the calves come.

Oh, I didn't think about security thing. Well, I guess any ideas on traps and poison that won't harm pets is what you need.
I hear ya on the letting things dry up bit. Wet sloppy mud is about the worst. I hauled in several heaping manure spreader loads of sawdust from a local sawmill and so far the calves have stayed pretty healthy laying on that. Tough getting it in to the cowyard though. I had to have my brother pull the tractor and spreader in with the Timberjack skidder to get up to the high ground where I wanted to spread it out. We do need moisture though, so I can't complain much.

I have had very good luck with the sticky glue pads for catching mice. bait them with peanut butter to attract the rodents. make a wire enclosure the dog can't get into.
The glue pads are named "Tomcat" and come in 2 sizes, small mouse pads and larger rat pads. Available at any home or farm store. I buy the rat size and had one that caught 6 on one pad in one night.
I like to know where the critters die, so don't have a smell when they decay... Gene

That's some nasty stuff and should be used with great care. It is the same stuff as Coumadin that is used to thin blood in people. Mother in law was taking two 1 mg tablets which were orange brown in color but got 5 mg tablets instead and took two as usual. It caused her to bleed internally and had to have a length of intestine removed. She also suffered a stroke that she hasn't recovered from. Be very careful with that stuff when other animals are around.

That's too bad. I hope he makes it. I always believed you can have pets or use rat poison not both. If the mouse eats it he dies. The pet will eat the dead mouse and poison himself. Same thing with antifreeze. Vet said one lick will kill them. I use mousetraps. The dogs nose is too big to fit in it. Also you can dispose of the mouse. He doesn't go off elsewhwere and die. I'd throw out that poison and buy mousetraps.
