Once you get the rust knocked down; if you have trouble getting it out; duct tale a small diameter PVC pipe to your shoppe Vac hose and suck it out. Use a small enough pipe or hose that you can move it around in there and peep in with a light at the same time for the absolute best results. This also can be used to get fuel out w-o disconnecting lines etc. - just be sure the shopp vac is clean.

This is how I cleaned the inside of the tank on "Uncle Earl" my 39B.

Strap the gas tank with some rubber "bungy" straps to the wheel of another tractor .

Put some new/clean chain inside the gas tank that is strapped to the wheel.

Go for a long ride.

Remove the chain from the tank strapped to the wheel and blow it clean with your air hose.

See the "how to" slide show below.

Hope this helps.

Just Don't put Loose rocks etc. into a tank that the filler neck sticks down into the tank, i did that on an unstyled J.D. B once and had a heck of a time getting all the rocks out.

A friend of mine said on light rust to use Muriatic Acid on it and then about 6 ft. of small chain. Hold on to one end of the chain put the rest in and shake it all around and rinse out. Then coat it with the diesel fuel.

Never tried it myself but he claims it works good for him and he has restored several.

The Works is a muriatic acid which will not raise eyebrows when purchased by a 14 year old. Also Mom might have some under the sink. (The key to the problem is surface rust, not bad.) Rust with a scale would need a corse meada to knock off the scale. The key to cleaning is to understanding what you are cleaning. You dont use sand paper to remove tar from your car or truck.

I once took a gas tank off an A JD. It was pretty nasty inside. I used about 2 lbs. of 22 bullit casings. I jacked up my JD 40, strapped the gas tank to the wheel and tumbled it for about an hour. It worked really well. Then I took it to a car wash and washed it out, took it home and let the sun finish drying it. You could probably use other media such as small gravel. If you try this, be sure to turn it slow..... .....rw

If it is that good I would suggest using a bottle of the Works Bath Stool cleaner. Dump the bottle in and top it off with water. The next day rinse good with water and after you have all the water blowed out dump in a quart of diesel and swish it over all the inside of the tank. I would not then get in a hurry to remove the diesel.

Becareful with gravel you might just be putting more dirt in it, the guy at the gas tank store told me just to get some of that rust away, dump in and shake around, maybe some casings, pennies, whatever to agitate the material.
