What way do most of you put the caps on? I have always installed with the hinge facing towards the front of tractor. My reason is for brush or limbs it will push down and less likely to snag on. The wife says I am doing it wrong and likes hinge toward rear. The reason is blows exhaust more out of driver. I then have seen them installed to either side , don"t know the reason for this? Kind of silly for me to notice or post, just a slow afternoon.

I really have no preference, it just depends on what you have for it to snag on. We've destroyed more than a couple pulling into and out of the old shed, but that once is settleing really bad so each time we need to cut another inch or 2 off the extension.

Our 1855 has the hinge on the front, but the muffler is high enough it isn't gonna come back to me anyway. Same with all of our tractors but the rest have the hinge to the back.

Except the 1600. The muffler isn't clamped down on that one so it'll spin around a little bit. We leave it loose so we can pull it off to back into the shed to get out the grain drill and the corn planter.

I use an old coffee cup to cap mine. Its heavy enough to never blow off. Makes a heck of a rattle if you start the engine and forget to take it off so you get reminded. Won't blow away when trailering either. Just an old heavy coffee mug. This way, when i'm running the machine i have no flipper cap to snag or blow smoke in my face....it all just goes straight up. I do like the look of the new Cat exhausts tho.

I install mine with the hinge facing the front.. but at an angle so the cap opens slightly away from the driver. This way, when i trailer her, the wind keeps the cap CLOSED. ( i trailer tractor facing forward.. )

Makin me feel bad now..... ... I just put on a cap last week (hinge forward). Since I had the tractor, I'd been using a can with a string tied to it and the end fastened to the rops. I put the cap on cause the can was always the nicest piece of metal on the tractor.

Curved pipes are good if they have enough curve to them to work and you don't park so the wind blows the rain in. The flip caps work well and my self I prefer them to the side so that the exhaust goes to the side. Cans are ok but if you ever forget to put it back on can be the last time the engine ever runs with out a lot of work. I have tractors set up with all the ways and my self I prefer the flip cover so as you don't need to think about it

Rain caps are annoying at best and a PITA at their worst. Soup cans seem to blow off upon starting and get flattened by a rear tire at my farm... Curved pipe with a slash cut is the only way to go, in my opinion.

Try a curved elbow on your exhaust pipe. I made the switch on everything around here and now that I have, I'm never going back to the hinged rain caps. The curved exhaust pipe doesn't get caught in anything, and the only way water can get in is if the rain is blowing sideways. Just make sure that the bottom inside of the pipe is behind the top part, or it will collect water.

Make sure the muffler is short enough that it clears the barn or garage door when the cap is open.Bends the hell out of things if it isn't.

kmm: Throw the damn thing away and get yourself a soup can. I've seen raincaps snag tree limbs on any direction. If you want it to stay closed during a storm, you've got to tape it shut. If you've got to climb up to tape it you may as well put a can on.

Rain caps standing up during a rain and wind will probably deflect 6 times the water down the stack than would happen with nothing over it.

If it"s a gasser....
Hugh is right.
REAL men use soup cans. Campbell"s Bean with Bacon cans work best.

45 degrees from the front. Allows partial compliance with deflection away from personal intake.(EGR for organisms is not the best policy) and provides for limb issue resolution. A bit of tape for parking it when storms or travel on a trailer help prevent water ingestion. JimN

Should the toilet paper hang from the top of the roll or the bottom? I think the rain cap thing is the same scenario. Jim

Mine SHOULD be hinge forward so it doesn't blow open when I haul it. I did the hinge back to keep it from spitting on me when it starts.

One of my friends said to put them crossways so they don't blow open when hauling.
