I just wanted to put my say so on here about the quake this morning. I will be the fist to say that I did not like getting woke up like that. It scared the sh!t out of my family, my kids were really upset. I feel like I would rather take my chances on getting out of the house rather than trying to find door frames for everyone. Bride tried getting all the kids to go to our bedroom while them and I where crashing into each other in the hallway and me hollering get out of the house. Thought I would never say that until they where 18. At fist light went out to check on things and did'nt see anything damaged. The dog sure was glad to see me though. Last one I felt was in 02 when my barn was being built. Hope the rest of you all are ok guess that makes this the quake of 08 as my daughter says.

People in Atlanta GA felt it. I was asleep at 5:30 EST. Probably more in the local Rome paper in the morning. David.

Re" Lanse"s comments about his animals--animal behavior has long been (unofficially) recognized as predictors of earth tremors and quakes; the Chinese watched for them in their earthquake nets and the reports go as far back as our history, along with variations of water levels in wells, the "feel" of certain kinds of "weather" (variations in the normally existing magnetic gravitic environment??)and so on.
Fascinating to read up on--of course, since the animals can"t keep precise records, it"s always considered "anecdotal" evidence, or you"re just considered a wacko of some kind...

I heard about it but did not feel it here at the lake of the Ozarks area of Missouri. But I figure one of these days the new Madrid fault will let loose big time then maybe I will feel my first quack

In the relm of geologic time making a 20 year prediction is kinda questionable. The largest earthquake in US history outside of Alaska was in New Madrid Missouri. It happened only an istant ago in geological time. If I lived midwest I wouldn't feel to smug and superior thinking the big one couldn't happen where I lived. California has spent billions on upgrades, has strict building codes and the state and county Emergency Services prepare and drill on this all the time. The amount of resources that can be moved around (and managed)through mutual aid agreemants is amazing. I wonder if they have been as dilligent in the area from say, Chicago to Memphis ?

Lanse, funny you mention that my chickens and geese I thought had odd behavior today like the dog as I said earlier. I've always heard animals can sense storms and etc. coming. They stayed close to home and did not stray around much today.

Being a californian, I will take a quake every couple of years over tornados year in and year out. I think they are kind of fun. They rumble and roll and then there is an after shock or two. No big deal.

California is next! in reply to Big G, 04-18-2008 18:47:39
Los Angeles has expanded an additional 35% since 1990. They still have double decker, non-earthquake rated concrete-engineered columns...

The sake for development is considered over engineering and safety.

IN the next 20 years there is a 99% probability of an earthquake maxing the charts.

Recommendation?

MOVE.

I think the earth quake he is talking about was in the mid west. Kansas City news said people were woken up by the tembler.
