well 4 down 2 to go. So far 1 black bull calf. 1 solid black heifer and 2 solid red heifers. All I have left to calve is that shorthorn/angus and an angus/pinzgaur. Was quite the adventure trying to get the one born yesterday in that wind and snow into the shelter. That red angus mama wasnt really amused with me grabbing her 20 minute old baby and walking away with it, actually after 3 steps I was running for my life with it. Loittle girl spent the night outa the wind and rain and is all full energy this am. If this heifer rate keeps up I am not gonna have the 4 steers to feed out like I was planning. I cant bring myself to use them heifers as feeders. In any of your guys experience is creep feeding a good practice as far as calf health and economics are concerned. The 5 day old calves are already chewing hay and looking for things to munch on.

My hat goes off to you guys up there trying to raise calves. I have enough problems down here.

Hear you on running. Last year I had a couple of calves basking in the sun. Was early afternoon, sun was coming down real good and these critters were all stretched out just like they were dead. Scared the heck out of me. Looked around and saw nothing to have caused it so I touched one with my toe.

Well, I didn't realize it but mother and the rest of the cows came up behind me and when she saw me touch her baby she charged me and literally backed me up to about crotch deep in the pond.....next time I will be more careful. This cow is my best and most protective mother. Really wish all were like that.

Had another one (heifer) yesterday. Had to fish it out of the pond but it seems to be doing ok.

Must be a heifer kind of a year. I was at something like 19 heifers and 6 bulls before I got 7 bulls in a row. I'm up to 48 calved with 28 to go.Running about 50/50 bulls and heifers now. Had a heck of a run of bad luck.Lost 5 so far. One backwards, one with the nose up and the feet back. One got hung up in the mud in a cold rain overnight and froze, then two that the mothers wouldn't take care of after being weak from being born in the cold. Tried everything in my bag of tricks to save them. Was talking to a friend yesterday who said his neighbor had lost 18. Said he lost 7 in one shot in a heavy rain. 8 cows and calves were back across the creek when the water came up. They tried to come back across and only one of the calves made it.The rest went down stream.

My son works part time at a neighbor's dairy farm. He is cussing all those bull calves he is getting. Maybe you should trade.

I sure do miss the cows. I very least I used to walk out to the fence every morning and look. Miss pulling a calf at midnight in raging blizzard too. Miss trying to feed in 40 MPH gale and 10 below. Some thing just have to go in older years. Kennyp

Not sure right now, but then I have plenty of time to decide. Last fall I planned on buying 2-3 cows this winter, I bought 6. Then I bought a Pure bred Black Simmental heifer (6 months) from a cousen. I guessed I would get 4 bulls and 2 heifers from the cows this spring. I am east of St. Cloud. I think I may just keep the heifers for breeding stock, unless the demand for female solids red and blacks go way up I may sell a couple when the time is right, or if a friend is in need for one.
