I just bought a jd500 backhoe, and am starting to use it. It has been sitting in a barn for a long time, but it is in great shape. BUT, the swing cylinder barrel thing is leaking pretty bad when i put the boom under a load. Does anyone know how to remove this barrel assembly cylinder thing? it appears that the entire boom must be removed for servicing, but god i hope not.. any help would be greatly appreciated...

So after parking the machine, I found there to be a pinhole in the fuel tank, and a steering hose started leaking on my way back to the garage. So I removed the fuel tank, and welded it up, and replaced the steering hose. I have also rebuilt one of the steering cylinders as well due to a leak. All things are going smoothly BUT. Now i have started to remove the rotary boom swing cylinder, and have run into a few snags. After supporting the boom, and removing the lower pin and the lift cylinder pin, i cannot get the lower bearing hat off of the frame. The upper one came off, and i removed the coupler, but the lower cap will not budge. I am assuming that when it comes off, that i can take the barrel out rotary cylinder out at that point for rebuild? i think?? Any suggestions???

ok.. upon further review, it appears that the boom assembly must be removed from the backhoe frame to rebuild the rotary cylinder. I took the cap on the top up to see, and that was in deed the bearing holder. It appears that the rotary cylinder shaft is splined up into the cap through the bearing. Is there a trick to this, or do i just need to park it under a tree and take off the boom?

The JD website has all the parts listed. You have to watch which serial number range as they were several versions of the 500 series.

You must have a barrel swing cylinder there..The cylinder can be removed if you swing the backhoe all the way to the side..There are 2 lines, a link that must be removed , bolts on the caps..I made up an adapter to pick up the cylinder from one of the top bolts with a cherry picker or chain fall..The adapter screws into one of the top holes..That sucker is heavy..There are timing marks on the cylinder shaft and cap..Must be lined up or will not swing properly...
