Hey guys I am just looking for a rough estimate of what it takes to grow an acre of field corn.
Fuel, fertilizer, seed, figuring the ground will need to be disked at least twice for prep before planting. It will be planted with a conventional planter, not a no till. Disregard equipment and propery costs & depreciation etc. Located in SW Michigan.

As always thanks for the help.

Mike

What we JUST finished planting was a cost per acre of $534. Thats fuel, fertilizer and nitrogen, spray, and Roundup Ready seed. Thats todays cost.

Wow, are you using vt triple type of corn and really throwing the fertilizer at it for high yeilds? For me, 109 bu/acre county average, I couldnt do it. After the last 2 weeks I really wish I would have seeded the whole 40 acres in rye. That stuff is growing like crazy and prices are up there pretty high as well. Stuff must like pospherous

well, for a 7 acre feild I starter fertilizer (dry) was qoated at $74 ACRE, followup with 100# urea add$67acre. Seed was $156 a bag, 80,000 seed count, divide that by you planted population per acre. If coop sprays they qoated $21/acre for Spraying round up with a residual. Fuel , well I am still using the free stuff that lady gave me from her heating tank 2 years ago. Now that cheap rent 12 acres, that is causing me some pain, both on the unexpected tillage of the sod that I did not realize was so thick, and the amount of fertizer I had to toss on it today so I can get a decent crop of oats this year, rain permitting. $950, just for the fertilaizer

Fuel cost depends on the size of the equipment, but tillage through harvest I figure $10/ acre. $30/ acre for conventonal seed, $60 for triple stack. Hebicides and application $50/acre. Fertilizer $100/acre. So I come up with $220/acre. The DIRTI five will add another $100.

BTW, I sold new crop corn today for $6. At 150bu/ acre that makes $900 gross per acre less $320 equals a pretty nice income.

I think your estimates are a bit low or missing something. A few months ago our tried and true fertilizer supplier gave us a spreadsheet that listed everything and they had just over $500 an acre. That was with fertilizer prices then and not now. Although yours doesn't have an estimate for the rent/taxes so I suppose you aren't too far off if land is going for about $100 in MI like they are here in Northern IN.

Well, DIRTI is depreciation, interest, repairs, taxes and insurance. Land costs would be $150/ acre. On the better ground land cost/rent is as high as $300.

So you would see that a grand total would be $470 to $620. Those are my real life numbers for the 2008 production year.

Shawn, where in the Thumb are you? I'm in Sandusky. Don't farm myself, just like to watch what everyone else does.
