Great car, regardless of how the stripes got started.

Personally, I like the stripes... as long as they are tastefully done. Too many or offset to one side doesn't sit well with me.

I just might have to make the trip down there to enjoy some $4 gas going through 60's muscle! :)

Nice Chevelle... take me for a ride this summer if I make it down there? LOL

Always wanted some kind of classic muscle car... until I drove a couple. A '65 Mustang drives pretty poorly compared to my 01 Accord - and a friend of mine had one of them Chevelles back in the day, he says if you went over a speed bump a little off, the door would open enough that the dome light would come on!

Still fun to play with, though. :)

Anytime Steven, havent had any doors want to come open on this one, So i will make sure you wont fall out!, thanks for all the replies guys, The stripe thing has alway been a debate in the car world for years I believe, But I saw a brand new mustang yesterday at the stealership that had big fat black rally stripes on it, so I guess im not the only one that thinks they are neat!

[quote="Goose"](quoted from post at 21:03:49 05/17/08) I've often wondered if the people who put those stripes on cars really are aware of the origin.

In racing in Europe, rookie or amateur drivers were required to put the stripes on their cars so the old pros would know to stay clear of them because they probably didn't have a clue what they were doing.

Somewhere along the way, someone in the U.S. thought they made the car look macho.[/quote

Guess you can call me a rookie, have only owned the car 10 years but have only been driving it 3, takes along time to restore one of these cars, always have liked the cortez silver with black stripes, have seen a few around. 427 big block, 4 speed, 465 hp on dyno. factory a/c and p/s p/b. i know its not origional, but its fun!

hood stripes vs rookie stripes. in reply to Goose, 05-17-2008 21:03:49
Those "rookie stripes" were on the rear quarters and were required in the US back in the day also.I had to run them on my B-Sedan Yenko Stinger Corvair back in '75 when I first got my SCCA license. They have nothing to do with hood stripes, which were popularized by Ford with their Cobra and GT40 efforts...

The L88 stripes look great- I've always thought the nicest combinations were the white-on-orange and the silver-on-blue (as found on my big block El Camino!)

That "someone" in the US musta been somebody with alot of influence with all the automakers at the times, since those stripes(or some similar variation of 'em) came stock from the factory on most all the US-made musclecars. Most of which would blow the doors off the average European "sports cars" of the day(check out the tests between the Pontiac and Ferrari GTO's).

Maybe whoever it was that came up with the idea of putting those on the American cars was actually making an early "in your face" statement to those Europe car companys??? Kinda like "yeah, us Americans are rookies, but yer still gonna have to eat our dust"...

By the way, "rookie stripes" have long been a part of American racing too....in Indy cars, they'll have their stripes on the rear bumpers...dont know about NAPCAR....at our local dirt tracks we have alot of fun with duct tape putting 'em on guy's rear bumpers when they're not looking then telling them they have their "rookie stripes on"...

Disregarding the cr2p that has emerged there was another reason,I have heard, for the stripes and it fits in with the last para by "Goose".
That being it was thought up by Edgell Ford.
It was said , in the 1970's , he had a Ford that was a slow seller ,but had the same shape as a musclecar,so he came up with the idea of stripes, whether it was an original idea or borrowed we may never know.Incidentially it turned out to be a winner.Hence them coming out of the factory so painted.

Dad had a 55 Chevy he rebuilt in the late 60s, he had the stripes on it, so I think they were around before the 70s.

Not knockin your answer I had a 55 Belaire I called it a dresser cause it came factory. outside mounted sun visor, skirts on back fenders.roof and trunk was painted white to include 1/2 top of back fenders. The rest of the car was black These cars didn't have any factory stripes But we dressed them in the same tape style as you see today. By the way thanks for the memory I almost forgot about that one.

I was futunate enough to find Dads 55, or what was left of it, in a salvage yard near here. I dont remember the car itself, but I do have some pics somewhere around here of when I was 2 or 3, and its in the background. Dad had bought it a coupel of days after he got hom from Nam in 68. That was what he and Mom drove for little while until I came along. Dad bought Mom a new 69 Fairlane, I think it was, and hot rodded the 55 up. I wish I could find the pics of it. He was holding me while sitting on the trunck lid. That had to be the summer or late fall of 69. He let me uncle borrow it to go to town for something, rolled it about 9 times.
