Back pressure is not an issue in a 4stroke engine! The less the better.Headers help to scavange exhaust not hold it back, hence -backpressure. Hoss

I'd run 2.5" through the stacks to withing 6" of the top. As leroy said- good heat sheild, no heat discoloration, should look and sound cool!

"Restoring"???? I don't remember any 83 Chevy pickups coming from the factory with stacks up through the bed...."Redoing" might be a better term here...:)

But, as far as sound goes, if ya want it quiet, just run normal sized pipes(2 1/4 or so) pipes with stock-style mufflers between the engine and the stack inlets. It'll still have a bit of a rumble out the stacks but won't be too bad. If ya want it to really cackle, run glasspacks instead of the stock mufflers. The shorter the glasspacks, the louder it'll be.

The backpressure/flow on the entire exhaust system will be determined by the diameter of the pipes right out of your manifolds or headers or whereever the smallest point in the system is, not by the stack's diameter, so go for it if that's whatcha want. Dont forget the whip antennas and mudflaps with the chrome nekkid women on 'em!

If you only go with the stack you will not have enough backpressure. You will produce less horsepower. So go with the pipe inside.

You can get chrome or stainless pipes that are made for tractors that are smaller than that just check tractor parts out fits like shoup.com or value-bilt or the-co.com. Lee

if you run smaller pipe inside and leave top and bottom of large pipe open it will act as a heat shield similar to double wall chimney pipe for furnaces. it will help prevent contact burns if you should touch it and heat shouldn't discolor chrome as bad.

the wider the pipe, the deeper the sound. The longer the pipe, the more resonance.

Are you running headers? that will give it extra sound also try finding stainless steel pipes from old pipe-lines in Dairy farms I think it was 2 inch if memory is right. it will be hard to hide when you are going up a hill or get on it. They cackle pretty good.
