What happens to a 6 volt starter if it is used on a 12 volt system? Thanks much. God bless. Phil

Broken starter drives are common.Motor runs at twice the speed when the gear engages the flywheel teeth.

I have been using mine on my Case LA for several years now crank the "H" out of it sometimes with no problem what so ever.

Well about all that happens is they get hotter faster if you let them spin to long. A 6 volt starter has heavy wires in it because lower volts means higher amp to do the same job

we used to do this all the time with VWs that we converted to 12 volts, since the starter swap required a flywheel change. 12V really made that 6v starter fly- not a bad thing sometimes!

Not much, except that it will turn a lot faster. I've used one on my JD A for 15 years, 6V starter on 12V. No problems. What hurts them is heat, so don't crank the engine a long time without letting the starter cool down. Starters are not designed to run continuously, no matter what voltage.
