Dear Lads I have an old diesel 40HP International tractor that was on a log splitter all fall and than stored all winter in a heated shed. Now this spring when it runs there is a smell of smoke and black smoke comes out of the muffler when I give it gas but it is not burning oil. Also it is a bit harder to start. Should I be worried?

My D19 diesel usually is parked during the coldest several months of winter. With or without fresh fuel, when it's started up in the spring it usually needs to work for a couple of hours before it smooths out and runs decent again.

Most have hit it pretty good, but also could be rich on the fuel. Intake not clogged as well and running rich? Just a thought since was running well when you parked it. You aint missing a barn cat and maybe see a cat's tail hanging out of the air cleaner? Well, neighbor's cat?

And by the way, I smell when I run, but that's another issue.

Mark

Diesel engines do not like to be treated easy. Everything gets all sooted up inside. You need to start that engine, warm it up a bit, and then work the ever-livin' you know what out of it. That tractor will thank you.

DIESEL! If you"re sure the engine is intact, replace old fuel with fresh, and try working it for a couple hours. See if it doesn"t clear up on it"s own.

Was the fuel drained before storing it? Sounds like it is running to rich or possibly bad fuel. Try draining the tank and putting fresh fuel in, this may clear it up.

Totally disconnect the air supply from the engine. Start it up. Work it for 30 minites. If it stops smoking you have something obstructing the air supply. One year old fuel is NOT your problem. Let us know. bob farrell
