weight of a standard square bale?

I have baled close to 150 square bales this weekend with my NH 273 baler. The first 100 were heavy as heck, the next 50 I baled a little loose and they seemed a little too light. I am going to weigh the two types of bales tomorrow and have probably another 100 to bale. My question is, how much should a standard square bale weigh? I am about going to come close to running out of room to store them so I want to go a little heavier without breaking my back stacking them. I am a one man operation.
thanks

Your windrows are just a important as the tension on the bale chamber. I finally realized late last year that my 273 likes good sized windrows to make decent heavy bales.

I know the world has changed a lot in the last fifty years but when I was bucking bales in the 50s & 60s the target was sixty-five pounds. However, if sold by the ton and un-weighed the custom was 'thirty-three bales to the ton.' Sixty-five seemed a good weight to handle. You weren't likely to bust a gut and in a pinch (long walk to the truck) you could carry one in each hand.
Amazing what a country kid would do for a penny a bale or $.75 an hour whichever they paid that year.

That depends on local custom. Around here, people talk about a 50 pound bale, and it seems most people run 38 inches in length. When I increased my bale tension, I had to go to a shorter bale. Its a 'buy by the bale' market here.

Around 75lbs is pretty much standard give or take a few pounds. Me I bale them at around 40lbs which is still 5lbs more then the doctors say I should lift. I use a NH271 and ya I can pack them in tighter but why do so you only have one back and when it goes your screwed big time I know because mine is

We try to keep ours in the 65 to 70 pound range. Makes them easier to handle. I'm using a New Holland 426 with hydraulic tension.

Walts numbers are right 50-80 but the little horsey girls here want 40 so they can lift them. Same price to me so I'll bale two 40s instead of one 80.

my little horsey girls would bust your a$$ if you tried to sell them a 40lb bale! This is a good question, though- is a 75lb bale sold for 7.50 a better deal than a 50 lb bale for 6.00? You'd think so, but weight rarely seems to be an issue in hay discussions out here....

50 to 80 is what I bale them at.
